In a joint statement on a new era of international relations, Xi and Putin have thrown down the gauntlet to the US-led world order. Those who thought history had come to
an end with the collapse of communism in the USSR might have another think coming

Philip J. Cunningham has been a regular visitor to China since 1983,
working as a tour guide, TV producer, freelance writer, independent

Beijing and Moscow have good reason to feel isolated and unloved these days, and in their loneliness, they have found each other. The two erstwhile fraternal communist giants are closer to an alliance than they have been since Mao Zedong broke with Moscow during the Cuban missile crisis in 1962. There’s still plenty of disparity between the national interests of China and Russia, but faced by containment on all sides, they are finding important points in common, too.
China has an economy six times that of Russia’s, but what Russian President Vladimir Putin lacks in wealth and manpower can to some extent be addressed by his unblinking willingness to engage in asymmetrical battles against better-equipped adversaries.
More troubling, not just for Putin’s foes but for the planet in general, has been Putin raising the spectra of a nuclear attack.

Despite its brevity and complications in UkrainePutin’s visit to Beijing during the Winter Olympics was more than a photo opportunity. After his meeting with President Xi Jinping, the two leaders issued a 5,000-word joint statement about a shared vision for international relations in a new era.

Journalist Robert Scheer describes the statement as a “historic articulation of the major shift underway from the unipolar world that has existed since the fall of the Soviet Union”.

Xi meets with Putin ahead of Beijing Winter Olympics opening ceremony

Xi and Putin have, for now, joined forces to throw down the gauntlet to
the US-led world order.

A week later, President Joe Biden’s White House released the “Indo-Pacific Strategy
of the United States”, a mix of democratic blather and muscular plans for containment.

“Enemies of My Enemy: How Fear of China Is Forging a New World Order” by Michael Beckley, published in the latest issue of Foreign Affairs, gives useful background to the current rearranging of the global chessboard.

Although Beckley’s conclusion that the US must prevail is open to question, he argues rather convincingly that niceties like “the liberal order” don’t exist in a vacuum but need an enemy.

Ukraine: why China’s hands are tied as Russia and the West face off

And it takes a truly frightening enemy to get self-interested nations to subordinate their own best interests to those of a larger grouping. Nato is a prime example of a grouping built and maintained on fear.

The Axis-versus-Allies fight divided the world into camps in the second world war,
while the Cold War, which was mercifully more smoke than fire, was never short on fear. The “free world” wasn’t uniformly free, but it was effectively united against the “Reds”. Allies were courted and whipped into line based on terrors both real and imagined.
The Sino-Soviet split brought the fault lines of the red world into the open,
cracking the bipolar order.

This led to the Sino-American rapprochement, which served to corner Russia.

Nixon in China: How a US presidential trip made history 50 years ago.

The collapse of communism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe was a political earthquake that informs the slightly paranoid worldview of Xi and Putin to this day.

The old duality began to erode and, depending on where you stood, either history had come to an end, with the US and its capitalist allies running a victory lap around the rubble of the discredited communist system, or as it might appear from Moscow and Beijing, it was not the end of history but merely a chapter in which it was necessary
to lay low.

The economics underpinning the growing Russian-Chinese influence  31 Jan 2022
During the Deng Xiaoping years, and those of his like-minded successors Jiang Zemin
and Hu Jintao, China made a concerted effort to guard its ambition and bide its time,
but that’s not to say China ever really embraced a unipolar world with the US in charge.

There were genuine feel-good moments during the high tide of cultural exchange and booming trade, but a careful read of what China was saying all along suggests that the much-heralded US-China partnership was provisional.
“You Should Look Back”, by Geremie Barmé for China Heritage, is a useful China watcher’s compendium which suggests not so much that China has changed under Xi,
as that it has been going in this direction all along.

In Russia, KGB-trained martial arts enthusiast Putin stepped into the ring with a sense
of purpose, and he is still in the ring, still trying to restore lost glory and lost territory.

The world is united in Ukraine, divided in America.
In Ukraine today, moves and countermoves by the newly assertive Russia and the U.S.
are attempts to get the other side to blink first. Between Nato, G7 and the Quad, the U.S.
has many more allies than China and Russia combined. It’s the isolation of Moscow and
Beijing which makes the growing closeness meaningful, even if they are not strictly allies.

Trade between the two giant neighbours would go a long way towards reducing the impact of sanctions and having each other’s back could make a huge difference if fighting breaks out in either realm.

A Brown Hand Lifts The Lamp Beside That Golden Door.

I did not know that the Statue of Liberty was originally meant to celebrate the
liberation of slaves, and that her face may have been modeled after that of an
Egyptian woman.

America is browning. By 2044 less than half America’s population will be white.
Despite the most heinous (and hopeless) efforts of some to hinder the progress of minorities and to put an end to America’s tradition of immigration, most Americans
take pride in supporting civil rights and welcoming immigrants to our shores.

As well we should. For all America’s flaws, it is those two factors that will preserve our nation’s greatness. Yes, this claim sounds over-the-top, but that’s what the statistical
data show, validating everything Ezra Lazarus wrote in her poem “The New Colossus
at the foot of our Statue of Liberty. Why?

Look at the above list of problems faced by China due to their declining population,
and how the same problems (if to lesser extents) are faced by so many other nations.
With the sole exception of our slowly depleting Social Security trust fund, America is
not facing any of those problems.

Yes, our white population is declining — more are dying and fewer are being born — but our minority (i.e., Black/Hispanic/Asian) population is continuing to grow and reproduce, more than making up for the deficits of white people.
As a direct result, instead of the eventual (and unavoidable) decrease in the Chinese
GDP, America’s GDP growth will be concomitant with our continuing population growth.
What are the estimates of our population growth in the coming years?
Here’s a graph from the U.S. Census Bureau:

Estimated U.S. population by year (U.S. Census Bureau)

One might think that a big part of that population growth will be the elderly
who are no longer able to contribute to the workforce, but in reality, not so much?

By 2050, one-third of Chinese will be over the age of 60, but the Census Bureau
data indicate that only one-fifth of Americans will be over the age of 65.
Yes, the estimates are of different ages — 60 for China and 65 for America —
but that five-year gap cannot account for the 12% difference in proportion of
our nations’ respective populations.

Remember the earlier estimate that by 2100:
China’s population will decline to about 480M people? That same year, according to Census Bureau statistician Tammany Mulder, America’s population will be about 571M. Yes, you read that right — America will have more people than China. To be sure, that particular estimate is over 20 years old, but it’s not far off the trends delineated in the
five-year-old Census Bureau graphic above.

Side note: China recently raised its mandatory retirement age in an effort
to keep its elderly from becoming too much of a burden on their economy.
The mandatory retirement age had been among the lowest in the world —
60 for men and as low as 50 for women.

As most who read this article know, America has no nationwide mandatory retirement age. We can keep working (and contributing to the economy) as long as we want, as long as we’re physically able to work (though most of us would really prefer to be able to afford retirement, to be able to choose to retire once we’re old).
America’s Black, Brown, and immigrant populations will not only be providing our nation’s continued population growth, but — even more importantly — preserving
the relative youth of our population. This not only provides a more physically capable workforce but also avoids the trap China faces of having too few younger people to care
for too many elderly people.

Many who see that projection of a 571M population for America will immediately think that that means America will be far too overcrowded, living elbow-to-elbow in a dystopia right out of Soylent Green (which was supposed to occur in 2022, btw), but here’s a reality check:
“If you look at the density for the United States, we are not even coming close to
the densities that you see in Europe,” said Census statistician Tammany J. Mulder.
“The U.S. population density in 2100 would be 161.4 people per square mile, about
one-fourth the current population density of Germany and the United Kingdom.”

Too many white Americans “rage, rage against the dying of the white” as it were
(With apologies to Dylan Thomas), but we should instead be deeply grateful for the Black people, Brown people, and immigrants around us. Demographic trends conclusively show that they — and not we — are quite literally the future of our nation. It would be in all our best interests to stop decrying the ‘Browning of America’, and instead do our level best to ensure they have every tool and every advantage we can provide.

We’ve had our time at the wheel for many, many generations.

It’s their turn now.
Addendum: Of course, none of the estimates above take into account factors such as major wars, pandemics, or — most worryingly — global warming. But SpaceX founder Elon Musk and Alibaba founder Jack Ma both stated that the biggest threat the world will also face in 20 years is population collapse and its effect on global trade.

What impact will the Ukraine invasion have on wheat prices?

Fertilizer: Russia, Ukraine Conflict Could Cause Supply, Price Issues – DTN – AgFax
A Russian invasion of Ukraine will most certainly affect the global fertilizer market,
to what extent is not known. Several factors, including what sanctions Russia would
see and if those sanctions included crop nutrients, would dictate how fertilizers are affected.
We do know a conflict in the Black Sea region would probably lower the prospects of
less-expensive fertilizer prices for U.S. farmers in 2022, according to fertilizer analysts.
Home to 25% of the world’s most fertile soils, Ukraine produces wheat that feeds many vulnerable countries, meaning the war will affect food prices worldwide.

Which Country Supplies the Worlds fertilizers – Search (bing.com)
Ukraine was once known as the breadbasket of the Soviet Union, and in more recent decades as the breadbasket of Europe, meaning the Russian invasion is poised to have an effect on food prices across the world, especially on those of food staples such as flour and pasta, and therefore affecting vulnerable countries the most.
According to the UN’s Comtrade, the main destinations of Ukrainian wheat in 2019 were Egypt ($3.65bn worth), Indonesia ($664.5m), Bangladesh ($418.6m), Turkey ($207.4m) and Tunisia ($195.5m). In 2020, Lebanon imported a total of $148.49m worth of wheat. Of that, $119.1m came from Ukraine and $22.9m from Russia. The effects of the war are likely to be felt on bread prices across countries like Lebanon that rely heavily on wheat from Ukraine. More coverage of the Ukraine invasion from Investment Monitor:

From the Flour War in 1775 France (which acted as a prelude to the French Revolution
14 years later), to the Arab Spring in 2011 (where a spike in grain prices caused initial unrest in Egypt), to more recent protests in Lebanon and Sudan, increases in the price
of wheat can bring about widespread instability, so the invasion of Ukraine by Russia could have a ripple effect across the world in ways that go beyond military action.

Wheat prices were already poised to increase.
To exacerbate the situation, wheat prices were already poised to increase, according to Erin Collier, economist at the trade and markets division of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). “Global wheat markets have been tighter this year than usual, and that is because there were reduced harvests,” she says. “At the same time, demand has been really strong, so that has made wheat markets really vulnerable to any – even potential – supply shock.”

With both Russia and Ukraine being major exporters of wheat, this is only going
to add pressure to wheat markets, she adds. Along with the harvest issues, logistic disruptions and high energy and transport costs are also affecting wheat prices.
With Russia also being a major supplier of natural gas and fertilizers, sanctions
could potentially disrupt wheat markets and make prices shoot up, says Collier.

The wider agribusiness sector and FDI in Ukraine are obviously already seeing
the effect of the war.
Agribusiness giant Nestlé has already halted operations in Ukraine, as has the France-based vegetable group Bonduelle, stopping production in a factory the company has in Russia near the Ukrainian border.

Why Ukraine’s black soil is so heavily in demand.
Ukraine’s agricultural strength is partly linked to its fertile black soil, with 25%
of the world’s reserves on its land, according to the US Department of Commerce.
Black soil, or chernozem, covers about 7% of the ice-free land surface in the world,
and is a highly fertile soil rich in minerals, organic carbon, and is at least 25cm deep, according to the FAO.
Chernozem covers an estimated 230 million hectares worldwide as a continuous belt
in steppe and forest-steppe landscapes, mostly in Russia, Ukraine, the Great Plains of
the U.S. and northern Kazakhstan, along with some local concentrations and patches
in central Europe.

This fertile land is behind Ukraine’s grain strength, helping it to become one of the
world’s largest exporters of wheat and maize, as well as the world’s largest exporter
of sunflower oil, which is the fourth most-consumed vegetable oil in the world.
However, despite having rich soils and a strong agricultural sector, between 1932 and
1933 Ukraine experienced one of the worst famines in global history, an event that is now recognized by many countries as genocide, which caused the deaths of between 3.5 million and 7 million people. Known as the Holodomor, which translates as — ‘death by hunger’, the famine is considered within Ukraine to be a product of Joseph Stalin’s plan to keep control of the country, during which time he made it almost impossible for farmers and the rural population to feed themselves or the rest of the population.

Ukraine invasion will impact the global agriculture industry.
With the invasion of Ukraine advancing by the minute and sanctions towards Russia increasing, the importance of Ukraine to the world when it comes to not just agriculture, but numerous other industries are becoming more and more clear. Ukraine may have a strong emotional and geopolitical appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin, but the riches that lie within its boundaries will also have been a consideration.

As such, from the Holodomor to the more recent annexation of Crimea in 2014 and
now the full-blown invasion, Russia has wreaked havoc in Ukraine time and time again.
With global supply chains already highly vulnerable, however, and many countries round the world reliant on Ukraine’s agricultural produce, the impact of Putin’s action will have repercussions that are much more widespread than many imagine.
A rise in wheat prices can have a huge knock-on effect given the importance of bread to daily diets the world over. The human cost of the invasion within Ukraine is already tragic, but the possibility of other potential impacts due to the country’s importance to the global agriculture market cannot be ignored.

How is the Russia-Ukraine war linked to religion?
Ukraine’s tangled political history with Russia has its counterpart in the religious landscape, with Ukraine’s majority Orthodox Christian population divided between an independent-minded group based in Kyiv and another loyal to its patriarch in Moscow.
But while there have been appeals to religious nationalism in both Russia and Ukraine, religious loyalty doesn’t mirror political fealty amid Ukraine’s fight for survival.
Even though Russian President Vladimir Putin justified his invasion of Ukraine in part as a defense of the Moscow-oriented Orthodox church, leaders of both Ukrainian Orthodox factions are fiercely denouncing the Russian invasion, as is Ukraine’s significant Catholic minority.

“With prayer on our lips, with love for God, for Ukraine, for our neighbors, we fight against evil – and we will see victory,” vowed Metropolitan Epifany, head of the Kyiv-based Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
“Forget mutual quarrels and misunderstandings and … unite with love for God and our Motherland,” said Metropolitan Onufry, head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which
is under the Orthodox patriarch of Moscow but has broad autonomy.
Even that seemingly united front is complicated. A day after posting Onufry’s message on Thursday, his church’s website began publishing reports claiming its churches and people are being attacked, blaming one attack on the representatives of the rival church.
The division between Ukraine’s Orthodox bodies has reverberated worldwide in recent years as Orthodox churches have struggled with how and whether to take sides.
Some U.S. Orthodox hope they can put such conflicts aside and unite to try to end the war, while also fearing the war could exacerbate the split.

WHAT IS THE RELIGIOUS LANDSCAPE OF UKRAINE?
Surveys estimate a large majority of Ukraine’s population is Orthodox,
with a significant minority of Ukrainian Catholics who worship with a
Byzantine liturgy similar to that of the Orthodox but are loyal to the pope.
The population includes smaller percentages of Protestants, Jews and Muslims.
Ukraine and Russia are divided by a common history, both religiously and politically.
They trace their ancestry to the medieval kingdom of Kievan Rus, whose 10th century Prince Vladimir (Volodymyr in Ukrainian) rejected paganism, was baptized in Crimea
and adopted Orthodoxy as the official religion.
In 2014, Putin cited that history in justifying his seizure of Crimea, a land he called “sacred” to Russia. While Putin says Russia is the true heir to Rus, Ukrainians say their modern state has a distinct pedigree and that Moscow didn’t emerge as a power until centuries later.

That tension persists in Orthodox relations.
Orthodox churches have historically been organized along national lines, with patriarchs having autonomy in their territories while bound by a common faith. The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople is considered first among equals but, unlike a Catholic pope, doesn’t have universal jurisdiction.

WHO GOVERNS UKRAINE’S ORTHODOX CHURCHES TODAY?
That depends how to interpret events of more than 300 years ago. With Russia growing
in strength and the Constantinople church weakened under Ottoman rule, the Ecumenical Patriarch in 1686 delegated to the Patriarch of Moscow the authority to ordain the metropolitan (top bishop) of Kyiv. The Ecumenical Patriarch says it was temporary.
The Russian Orthodox Church says that was a permanent transfer.
For the past century, independent-minded Ukrainian Orthodox have formed separate churches which lacked formal recognition until 2019, when current Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew recognized the Orthodox Church of Ukraine as independent of the Moscow patriarch — who fiercely protested the move as illegitimate.
The situation in Ukraine was murkier on the ground.
Many monasteries and parishes remain under Moscow’s patriarch, though exact statistics are difficult to find, said John Burgess, author of “Holy Rus’: The Rebirth of Orthodoxy in the New Russia.” On the village level, many people may not even know about their parish’s alignment, Burgess said. Yes, though it’s complicated.

DOES THIS SCHISM REFLECT THE POLITICAL SPLIT BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES?

Ukraine’s former president, Petro Poroshenko, drew a direct link:
“The independence of our church is part of our pro-European and pro-Ukrainian policies,” he said in 2018.
But current President Vladimir Zelinskyy, who is Jewish, has not put the same emphasis on religious nationalism. On Saturday, he said he had spoken to both Orthodox leaders as well as top Catholic, Muslim and Jewish representatives. “All leaders pray for the souls of the defenders who gave their lives for Ukraine and for our unity and victory.
And that’s very important,” he said.

Putin has tried to capitalize on the issue.
In his Feb. 21 speech seeking to justify the imminent invasion of Ukraine with
distorted historical narrative, Putin claimed without proof that Kyiv was preparing
for the “destruction” of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate.
But the reaction of the Metropolitan Onufry, who compared the war to the “sin of Cain,” the biblical character who murdered his brother, indicates that even the Moscow-oriented church has a strong sense of Ukrainian national identity.
By comparison, Moscow Patriarch Kirill has called for peace but has not laid blame for the invasion. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church under the Moscow Patriarchate has long had extensive autonomy. Plus, it’s increasingly Ukrainian in character.
“Regardless of church affiliation … you have a lot of new clergies who grew up in independent Ukraine,” said Alexei Krindatch, national coordinator of the U.S. Census of Orthodox Christian Churches. “Their political preferences are not necessarily correlated with the formal jurisdictions of their parishes,” said Krindatch, who grew up in the former Soviet Union.

WHERE DO THE CATHOLICS FIT IN?
Ukrainian Catholics are based mainly in western Ukraine.
They emerged in 1596 when some Orthodox Ukrainians, then under the rule of the Catholic-dominated Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, submitted to the authority
of the pope under an agreement allowing them to keep distinctive practices such
as their Byzantine liturgy and married priests.
Orthodox leaders have long denounced such agreements as Catholic and foreign encroachment on their flocks. Ukrainian Catholics have an especially strong history
of resistance to persecution under czars and communists. “Every time Russia takes
over Ukraine, (the) Ukrainian Catholic Church is destroyed,” said Mariana Karapinka,
head of communications for the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia.

Ukrainian Catholics were severely repressed by the Soviets, with several leaders martyred.
Many Ukrainian Catholics continued to worship underground, and the church has rebounded strongly since the end of communism. With that kind of history, Ukrainian Catholics may have a strong reason to resist another takeover by Moscow. But they’re not alone, Karapinka said. “Ukrainian Catholics were not the only group persecuted by the Soviets,” she said. “So many groups have reason to resist.”
Recent popes have tried to thaw relations with the Russian Orthodox Church even while defending the rights of Ukrainian and other Eastern Rite Catholics. But after the Russian invasion, Pope Francis visited the Russian Embassy on Friday to personally “express his concern about the war,” the Vatican said, in an extraordinary papal gesture that has no recent precedent.

HOW HAS THE ORTHODOX SCHISM REVERBERATED BEYOND UKRAINE?
The Russian Orthodox Church decided to “break the Eucharistic communion” with the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople in 2018 as he moved to recognize an independent church in Ukraine. That means members of Moscow- and Constantinople-affiliated churches can’t take communion at the other’s churches.
The disputes have spread to Eastern Orthodox churches in Africa, where the Russian Orthodox have recognized a separate set of churches after Africa’s patriarch recognized
the Ukraine church’s independence.
But many other churches have sought to avoid the fray. In the U.S., with multiple Orthodox jurisdictions, most groups still cooperate and worship with each other.
The war may provide a point of unity among U.S. churches but may further test relations, said the Very Rev. Alexander Rentel, chancellor of the Orthodox Church in America,
which has Russian roots but is now independent of Moscow.
“This split that took place in world Orthodoxy was a difficult event for the Orthodox Church to process,” he said. “Now it’s only going to become more difficult because
of this war.”

Going Nuclear

Source: How widespread would fallout from a nuclear bomb be?
By Aria Bendix

As Russia attacks Ukraine, experts described what would happen in a nuclear strike,
which is unlikely. A modern-day nuclear bomb could wipe out an entire city and cause third-degree burns nearby it. But the strength of a blast depends on the size of the bomb and how it’s detonated.

Russian forces attacked Ukraine with missile strikes and shelling on Thursday,
kicking off a dramatic escalation of the conflict in the region. Russia has launched about 200 missiles since the start of the attack, a senior US defense official said at a Friday news briefing. At least 25 civilians have been killed in the fighting, according to the latest count from the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Security experts hope the conflict won’t broaden to include other countries or devolve into a full-fledged world war. In a speech on Tuesday, President Joe Biden said the US had “no intention of fighting Russia” but added: “The United States and its allies will defend every inch of NATO territory.” The US belongs to NATO, a military alliance consisting mostly of European countries, but Ukraine does not.

A nuclear strike is unlikely but not altogether implausible,
“I hope it doesn’t escalate, and I think there’s a good chance that it doesn’t, but the
risk is real whenever nuclear-armed states are engaged in conflict with one another,”
Tara Drozdenko, the director of the Union of Concerned Scientists’ Global Security Program, told Insider.
“Ukraine doesn’t have nuclear weapons, so the risk of nuclear war in this scenario is if, somehow, the conflict escalated to pull in NATO countries or the US,” she added.
“That raises the risk of nuclear confrontation because some of the NATO countries
have nuclear weapons.”

The US has about 5,500 nuclear weapons, while Russia has about 6,000, according to the Federation of American Scientists. Drozdenko told US nukes generally had explosive yields equivalent to about 300 kilotons of TNT, while Russian nukes tended to range from 50 to 100 kilotons to 500 to 800 kilotons, though each country has more powerful nuclear weapons.
“Modern weapons are 20 to 30 times more powerful than the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki,” Drozdenko said, adding: “If the US and Russia launched everything that they had, it could potentially be a civilization-ending event.”
Death, starvation, radiation poisoning, and 3rd-degree burns.

A single nuclear weapon can easily wipe out an entire city, Kathryn Higley, a professor of nuclear science at Oregon State University, told Insider. Video: Ukrainian forces prepare for war in ghost town near Chernobyl (The Washington Post)

“It’s really hard to say, ‘Well, this city will survive, and that city won’t,'” she added.
“It’s very, very dependent on weapon size, what the topography looks like, where they detonate it, who’s upwind, who’s downwind.”

When a nuclear bomb strikes, it sets off a flash of light, a giant orange fireball, and building-toppling shockwaves. People at the center of the explosion (within half a mile for a 300-kiloton bomb) could be killed right away, while others in the vicinity could suffer third-degree burns. A 1,000-kiloton nuclear blast might produce third-degree burns up to 5 miles away, second-degree burns up to 6 miles away, and first-degree burns up to 7 miles away, according to one estimate from Asap Science. People up to 53 miles away could also experience temporary blindness.
“Say you’re in a city, and you are far enough away from the blast center that you don’t
get a lethal dose of radiation — you are very likely going to be injured by a falling building or have third-degree burns over a large portion of your body,” Drozdenko said, adding: “There are not enough empty burn beds in all of the United States to deal with even a single nuclear attack on one city in the US.”

Nuclear explosions also produce clouds of dust and sand like radioactive particles that disperse into the atmosphere — what’s referred to as nuclear fallout. Exposure to this fallout can result in radiation poisoning, which could damage the body’s cells and prove fatal.
Fallout can block sunlight, causing temperatures to drop dramatically and shortening the growing season for essential crops. Drozdenko said crop production could be drastically altered for decades, which would result in famine in some places. If a nuclear weapon hit Washington, DC, it could kill about 300,000 people.

4 Key Factors for Surviving Nuclear War (mirasafety.com)
If a 300-kiloton nuclear weapon were to strike a city the size of Washington, DC, many residents wouldn’t survive, and some nearby residents would face devastating injuries.
“A lethal dose of radiation would cover pretty much most of the city and a little bit into Virginia,” Drozdenko said. “The thermal radiation, the heat, is going to go all the way out into parts of Maryland, a little farther into Virginia, and all those folks within that area are going to have third-degree burns.”
Drozdenko estimated that a single nuclear weapon could kill about 300,000 people in the Washington area and injure as many more. Multiple weapons could put the death toll in the millions, she said, depending on how many bombs fell and how powerful the blasts were.

“The bigger the weapon, the bigger the radius,” she said.
The fallout of a nuclear bomb also depends on how a country chooses to detonate it.
If the weapon struck land, the explosion would produce more radioactive fallout as dirt and other materials were thrown into the atmosphere. But if a country detonated the bomb midair, the shockwaves would bounce off the ground and amplify one another, Drozdenko said, which would result in a much larger area of destruction.
This “airburst” could also send radioactive materials as high as 50 miles into the atmosphere, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Countries rely on simulations and weapon tests to anticipate these effects, but it’s difficult to know
how a modern-day nuclear attack would play out in real life.

“There’s no historical precedent for this at all,” Drozdenko said, adding:
“The only time nuclear weapons have been used in a conflict is World War II.”

Russia’s attack on Ukraine raises a harrowing question: How widespread would fallout from a nuclear bomb be?

Nuclear Fallout refers to residual radiation after the detonation of a nuclear device
or a leak from a facility that contains radioactive elements such as a power plant.
In the case of a nuclear attack, the fallout would be widespread.

America’s first nuclear bomb test was in southern New Mexico in 1945.
Ever since then, the United States has tested 1054 nuclear weapons.
The effects of these have been widespread throughout the country.

The following excerpt is from —
Aftermath: The Remnants of War by Donovan Webster,
it is describing the testing of a 1-kiloton nuclear bomb in Nevada.
“As the explosion’s light and sound dissipated, the radiation cloud it created rose to join upper atmosphere winds coursing East across the bulk of the American Continent. Over the days to come, the breeze-borne radiation began sifting gently over an unsuspecting nation. Nuclear fallout contaminated wheat in South Dakota. It found milk in Massachusetts.
It was breathed by crabs and oysters in the Chesapeake Bay…Over the next twelve years, 126 atomic weapons would be atmospherically detonated above the Nevada Test Site…Each of these explosions would spread roughly the radiational equivalent of Ukraine’s 1986 Chernobyl reactor fire across an unknowing America.”(130, Webster).
If the American Government conducted these tests in the safest and most controlled ways they possibly could, think of the damage that would occur if another country or group were to use nuclear weapons to attack the United States.

The world may be witnessing the complete unraveling of Vladimir Putin.

Why Does a Nuclear Explosion Create a Mushroom Cloud? » Science ABC
The radiation from a nuclear war would affect people years after the bombs had been dropped. Depending on whether the bombs were detonated in the air or on the ground, the site could be radioactive for up to 5,000 years. Governments in other nuclear countries conducted tests similar to the ones conducted in the western United States.
These sites also continue to be irradiated and will remain so for thousands of years.
Many health problems would occur if people were exposed to this radiation. Webster demonstrated this with the quotation; “According to National Academy of Sciences and United Nations cancer research, radiation-associated cancers from atmospheric testing will produce at least 400,000 deaths by the year 2000, killing twice as many people as died at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.”

(Webster,132) “In the downwind town of Annabela, Utah (population 187), when three cases of leukemia came to one street in a year-the usual statistic is three cases
per 10,000 people- and cases of bone cancer and thyroid cancer sprouted elsewhere  across town, civic father became voluble and furious.”(Webster,156) In that same area, livestock were reported to show birth defects. Atomic testing has stopped in the United States since then.

On August 5, 1963, The United States, Great Britain and Russia all signed
the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty which stated that they could not test nuclear weapons in
outer space, underwater or in the atmosphere to protect the planet from contamination. (History.com 1) However, a nuclear war would be more catastrophic than the tests ever were. Besides the threat of radiation, there are even more severe consequences that could possibly come from a nuclear war.

One of these is the theory of Nuclear Winter.
This theory states that the ash from burning materials as well as fine sediments
disturbed by the blast would block out the warmth of the sun. This would cause all life on earth to slowly die out. A nuclear war would have irreversible effects on our planet as well as humanity itself.

Was The Movie the Conqueror Really Cursed?

A Look at Radiation Paranoia:
Few environmental myths have stood the test of time better than the notion that a significant number of the cast and crew of The Conqueror (1956) were felled by cancer, contracted as a result of exposure to radioactive fallout.
Certainly, all the elements of a good story are there. Several above ground atomic tests were run at Yucca Flats in Nevada from 1951-1953, including 11 in 1953 under the name “Operation Upshot-Knothole.” The movie was shot from May-August of 1954 in Snow Canyon State Park, located 11 miles (18 km) northwest of St. George, Utah.
As luck would have it, Snow Canyon is 137 miles (220 km) downwind of Yucca Flats.
To make matters worse, uncredited producer Howard Hughes shipped truckloads of
dirt from the site back to the studio for reshoots.

The Conqueror 1956 with John Wayne and Susan Hayward. Directed By Dick Powell.
The movie premiered on February 22, 1956, in Los Angeles, and less than seven years later, director Dick Powell died of cancer. After Powell, several of the leading actors succumbed to cancer, as well. There was Pedro Armendáriz, who killed himself in
June of 1963, rather than live with his terminal diagnosis.
Agnes Moorehead was the next star of the film to die of cancer, in April of 1974.
She was followed by Susan Hayward (March 1975) and John Wayne, who first contracted lung cancer in September of 1964 and finally died of stomach cancer on June 11, 1979.
Public interest was piqued by an article in the November 10, 1980, issue of People magazine, in which it was stated that “Of the Conqueror’s 220 cast in the November 10, 1980, issue of People magazine, in which it was stated that “Of the Conqueror’s 220 cast
and crew members from Hollywood, an astonishing 91 have contracted cancer.”
The article quoted Dr. Robert C. Pendleton, director of radiological health at the University of Utah: “With these numbers, this case could qualify as an epidemic.
The connection between fallout radiation and cancer in individual cases has been practically impossible to prove conclusively.
However, in a group this size you’d expect only 30-some cancers to develop.
With 91, I think the tie-in to their exposure on the set of The Conqueror would
hold up even in a court of law.”

This sounds impressive until you do some basic research. According to the National Cancer Institute, at the time the article was written, the overall incidence of being diagnosed with cancer in a person’s lifetime (age-adjusted) was about 40%.
As it happens, this number still holds today. Thus, in a cohort of 220 people,
88 would be diagnosed with cancer at some point.
I have no idea how Pendleton came up with his “30-some.” If anything, given the heavy smoking habits of many in the movie business at the time, including Dick Powell, Agnes Moorehead, Pedro Armendáriz, Susan Hayward, and John Wayne at five packs a day,
91 is completely within the expected range. The only “astonishing” thing is that the People article did not mention the smoking habits of any of the deceased stars.
Bruce Church is a health physicist based in southern Utah, who had been involved with the testing program for years and has done his level best to act as the voice of reason on the issue. Church told me about plaintiff’s attorneys going door to door, trolling for clients in the St. George area in the late 1970s, paving the way for a series of ultimately unsuccessful lawsuits, filed on behalf of the so-called “downwinders.”
He likes to remind those interested in these matters that since 1950, Utah has had
one of the lowest cancer mortality rates in the country. Moreover, Washington County—supposedly ground zero for the fallout—has one of the lowest cancer mortality rates in the state.

Much was made of an article entitled “Childhood leukemias associated with fallout from nuclear testing,” which appeared in the February 22, 1979, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
The study spoke of 2.44 times increase in mortality between the high-exposure and
low-exposure cohorts, within the high fallout counties examined. Again, this sounds impressive as long as you ignore the fact that even with this increase, the mortality rate was just slightly above the rate for the entire United States.
As you might expect, this significant qualification is infamously not cited in the dozens of web-based references to the study. And, given that the research effort set out to examine “high fallout” counties to begin with, it is quite suspicious that this group had to be parsed into low and high cohorts, which would only serve to magnify the effects observed. Further studies would continue to bear out negative or de minimis findings.

Thus, the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA)—passed in 1990—provides for money (typically $50,000) to be paid to victims of certain cancers, who simply have to prove that they lived in a list of counties during a particular time period.
RECA has paid out over $1 billion so far and has produced bountiful results for many Utah-based politicians.
Following the old adage that a cynic is someone who knows the price of everything but the value of nothing, this bounty paid on cancer has simply reinvigorated all the mythology:
If the victims are being compensated, the story must be true!

Ukraine vs Russia Military Powers: How Do They Compare? – Search (bing.com)

PLAN A | Princeton Science & Global Security

A simple comparison of the military strength of Russia and Ukraine, two countries that have long had tensions. The Russian government doesn’t create much of an illusion of press freedom. Many of the most prominent media organizations, from television channels to the Russian news agency TASS, are owned by the federal government, and journalists critical of the political establishment face not only censorship, but also risk to their lives and livelihoods.

That reality has become only more obvious since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
A survey of headlines in Russian news outlets this week reveals not so much what is happening inside the attacking nation, but rather what President Vladimir Putin’s government would like its citizens to believe.

Read MoreHere’s What We Know So Far About Russia’s Assault on Ukraine

On Thursday, Roskomnadzor—the federal organization responsible for controlling and censoring the media—issued a statement informing the Russian media “they are obliged
to only use information and data they have received from official Russian sources.”
The statement also warned that unnamed media outlets have spread “unverified and unreliable information.”

While some opposition publications such as Novaya Gazeta attempt to counter the narrative, mainstream Russian news outlets have largely fallen into line—even if the results are unlikely to fool discerning Russian readers who have been exposed to roughly 15 years of pro-government propaganda. The resulting stories are as striking for what they omit as what they actually publish; by and large, Russian media minimizes the scale of the attack on Ukraine—describing it in the phrase used by federal officials, as a “military operation” rather than a “war” or “invasion,” the terms much of western media has used—while uncritically reprinting statements from Putin and other government officials.

In some cases, Russian news stories have distorted what is happening on the ground in Ukraine. For example, an article published in RIA News on Thursday repeated the Russian Defense Ministry’s claims that any statements that Russian aircraft, helicopters, and armored vehicles have been lost are “complete lies,” in contradiction of international reports. The article also claimed that Ukrainian military personnel are leaving their positions “en-masse,” and that “Ukrainian border guards do not offer any resistance.” Ukrainian officials, meanwhile, have highlighted stories of guards refusing to stand down.

A U.S. official told TIME that disparaging comments about the Ukrainian armed
forces are part of a Russian strategy “to discourage them and induce surrender through disinformation.”
The official said, “Our information indicates Russia is creating a disinformation
campaign by publicizing false reports about the widespread surrender of Ukrainian troops. Our information also indicates that Russia plans to threaten killing the family members of Ukrainian soldiers if they do not surrender.”

World Condemns Russian Invasion of Ukraine

Russian news articles have also minimized the potential danger faced by Ukrainian civilians, often by repeating claims by the government without offering information that could contradict them. For instance, many pieces about the invasion repeated the Russian Military of Defense’s claim that it would attack only military targets, and that Ukrainian civilians are not at risk. A TASS article about the evacuation of Ukrainians to neighboring Moldova ends on that note: “As the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Defense stated, the Russian military isn’t striking at cities, but only incapacitates military infrastructure, so nothing is threatening the civilian population.”

This claim is doubtful from a historical perspective, given that about 3,400 civilians were killed in disputed territories in eastern Ukraine between 2014 and 2021, according to the United Nations, and a number of civilians have been killed this week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.
Without providing evidence, an article from the Russian news agency Interfax also repeated a claim by Putin that Ukranian forces are using civilians as human shields,
and that neo-Nazis are placing heavy weaponry in residential areas.

The same deference extends to the subject of the war’s justification.
News stories and opinion-driven pieces alike have claimed that the Ukrainian government is a “dictatorship” and that the Russian government was left with no choice but to attack Ukraine. (Zelensky was democratically elected in a process the democratic advocacy organization Freedom House describes as “generally competitive and credible.”)

The media has also appealed to Russians’ sense of responsibility for Ukraine, which Putin has alleged has no separate identity of its own—contrary to historical evidence—and has drawn connections between the present crisis and WWII, which Russians refer to as the “Great Patriotic War” and is remembered as a moment of national greatness and sacrifice. Insidiously, many news stories have repeated the Russian government’s claim that part of the purpose of the conflict, in the words of Russian press secretary Dmitry Peskov, is the “de-Nazification” of Ukraine. There is no evidence the Ukrainian government promotes Nazi ideology, and the claim is particularly striking as President Zelensky is Jewish and lost family members in the Holocaust.

the World’s Window into the Ukraine Invasion

It is unclear whether the Russian media’s reporting will persuade many Russians who
do not feel the conflict was necessary. As the New York Times reported this week, many Russians believed for some time that the likelihood of their nation’s invading Ukraine
was overblown, and their support for the government’s attack has been muted so far. Hundreds of Russians protesting the war have been detained in anti-war protests across the country, opposition publication Novaya Gazeta reports.

However, the challenges facing any Russians who hope to turn the political tide
against Putin’s regime include this significant obstacle: the absence of a free press.

Putin seeking to rebuild ’empire of evil’: Ukrainian member of parliament

‘Your World.’ —With reporting by Vera Bergengruen

Negative views of Russia have advanced to levels last seen during the Cold War and Americans broadly support sanctions in response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine — although support subsides to half if those sanctions raise energy prices in the United States.

President Joe Biden, for his part, gets more negative than positive ratings in this ABC News/Washington Post poll of his handling of the situation: Thirty-three percent approve while 47% disapprove, with the rest unsure. See PDF for full results, charts and tables.

More broadly, nearly half, 48%, say U.S. leadership in the world has weakened under Biden’s presidency, twice as many as say it’s grown stronger. And he’s underwater in
trust to handle a crisis, 43-52%, a tenuous position given the week’s events.

Sixty-seven percent support the United States and its European allies imposing economic sanctions on Russia, with 20% opposed and the rest unsure. If sanctions produced higher energy prices, as Biden has warned — support declines to 51%, with 33% opposed. That reflects economic discontent, with inflation at its highest in nearly 40 years.

This poll was fielded Sunday through Thursday night, including the periods in which Russia was menacing Ukraine and then, on Thursday, invaded. Attitudes may evolve as the crisis unfolds.
Most striking are views of Russia: Eighty percent see it as unfriendly or an enemy of the United States — the most since 1983 (measured then as the Soviet Union), although it
was similar, 77%, a few months after Russia invaded Crimea in 2014.

The current result includes 41% who now see Russia as an enemy of the United States, up from single digits in the early 2000s and early 1990’s alike. Just 12% call Russia friendly toward (or an ally of) the United States in this poll, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates. That’s down from 62% in 2002 (a period of post-9/11 solidarity) and a high of 66% in 1993, two years after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Groups

Partisanship largely falls away in views of Russia — large majorities of Democrats (86%), independents (81%) and Republicans (78%) call it either unfriendly or an enemy of the United States. So do 80 to 88% of political liberals, moderates and conservatives alike,
an unusual level of agreement in these typically divided groups.

There’s a somewhat larger political gap on sanctions, which Biden initiated Tuesday, then increased Thursday — 79% of Democrats support them, declining to 63% of independents and 62% of Republicans. Support for sanctions if they bring higher energy prices, for its part, is 15 percentage points lower among people already experiencing economic hardship because of inflation, compared with those not experiencing hardship.

On Biden personally, views revert to typical sharp partisanship, with independents — usually the fulcrum in national politics — siding negatively. Sixty-six percent of Democrats approve of Biden’s handling of the situation, dropping to 30% of independents and 8% of Republicans. Instead, 75% of Republicans and 54% of independents disapprove, compared with 13% of Democrats; the rest in each case are undecided.

Divisions are similar on trust in Biden to handle a crisis and on America’s world leadership. On the latter, 82% of Republicans say the country’s leadership in the
world has gotten weaker under Biden, as do 53% of independents, compared with
11% of Democrats.

When the same question was asked in 2017 and 2018 about U.S. leadership under President Donald Trump, these divisions were essentially reversed. Overall, though,
at Trump’s best, 30% said U.S. leadership had grown stronger, more than the 23%
who say that of Biden today?

Methodology
This ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted by landline and cellular telephone Feb. 20-24, 2022, in English and Spanish, among a random national sample of 1,011 adults. Results have a margin of sampling error of 4.0 percentage points, including the design effect. Partisan divisions are 27-26-40 percent, Democrats-Republicans-independents.

The survey was produced for ABC News by Langer Research Associates of New York, N.Y., with sampling and data collection by Abt Associates of Rockville, Md. See details on the survey’s methodology here.

The Connection Between Your Pee and Heart Health Is Anything but Basic
By Hannah Schneider

7 Silent Signs of a Heart Attack

Even if you aren’t familiar with uric acid, you’ve likely heard of gout: a painful form of arthritis that impacts around 9.2 million people in the United States. “Most everyone has heard of gout, a painful condition affecting around 4 percent of Americans caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints,” says David Perlmutter, MD, neurologist, and author of Drop Acid. “And truly, this is pretty much the only context in which
uric acid levels have traditionally been discussed.”
People without gout might be aware of their uric acid levels, but Dr. Perlmutter says we can all benefit from paying closer attention. Below, he explains why uric acid matters, what causes uric acid levels to rise, and how increased knowledge can benefit overall
heart health.

What is uric acid?
Uric acid is a waste product in your blood that’s produced when your body breaks
down chemical compounds called purines. Typically, uric acid is sent to your kidneys and expelled in your urine, the Cleveland Clinic explains. However, when your body is unable to process purines, the compound crystallizes and settles into the joints, which causes a condition called hyperuricemia—a common precursor to ailments like gout and kidney stones.
Risk factors like age, kidney function, diabetes, and gender, may make it harder for your body to break down purines, which raises your uric acid levels. Additionally, high-purine food like red meat, alcohol, high fructose corn syrup, and seafood can contribute to higher uric acid levels in the body, the Cleveland Clinic explains.

What’s the connection between uric acid and heart health?
Gout is diagnosed in people with uric acid levels of 7 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl),
but Dr. Perlmutter points out that those with levels at or above 5.5 mg/dl have higher
risks for metabolic and cardiovascular disease.
A recent study published in BMC Cardiovascular Disorders, an open-access peer-reviewed medical journal, assessed 32 studies which consisted of a total sample size of 1,134,073 participants. The results laid out a distinct association between uric acid and the risk of CVD mortality, with risks proving higher for women compared to men.
In a 2020 study published in Science Reports, 500,511 Japanese subjects (40–74 years) were assessed at annual checkups over seven years. Uric acid levels of greater than seven mg/dL in men and less than 5 mg/dL in women were associated with the aforementioned cardiovascular disease risks and cardiovascular disease mortality risks as well.

The reason that uric acid poses a risk to the cardiovascular system is that the substance inhibits the function of nitric oxide, which is a chemical that allows blood vessels to open up, Dr. Perlmutter says. When blood vessels are inhibited from opening, it increases the risk for cardiovascular disease in the long term, he says.

So, what should you do with this information?
Dr. Perlmutter says the most important takeaway is that knowing your uric acid levels can help you make informed decisions about your health. Having your blood tested for uric acid levels can provide insight into your risk for developing diseases or potentially point to solutions if you’re currently struggling with uric acid-related conditions like diabetes, gout, high blood pressure, or more, he says.
However, if getting blood testing isn’t an accessible option, Dr. Perlmutter says examining your purine consumption is an excellent place to start. High fructose corn syrup, in his opinion, contributes to higher uric acid levels. In Drop Acid, he explains that fructose consumption increased an astounding 1000% between 1970 and 1990 in the U.S., and
uric acid levels rose in lockstep with our fructose consumption.

Additionally, adopting a low-purine diet, drinking plenty of water, examining alcohol intake, and choosing complex carbohydrates like whole grains, vegetables, and beans
are all excellent ways to support kidney function and lower uric acid levels.

14 Common Causes of Frequent Urination (simplyhealth.today)
One of your biggest priorities after having a heart attack is probably… not having another heart attack.
This is a wise goal: According to the American Heart Association, one in five people who’ve had a heart attack will end up in the hospital with a second heart attack within five years.

This is because coronary artery disease, the most common cause of heart attacks,
is a systemic disease which medical treatments and surgeries generally don’t fix.
Instead, these treatments simply bypass it — says Andrew M. Freeman, M.D.,
a cardiologist and associate professor at National Jewish Health who specializes
in heart attack prevention and post-heart attack care.
This means it’s essential to take your recovery very seriously,
starting with a healthy diet following your heart attack.
“Look at your heart attack as an opportunity to pivot, to change your life to a healthier direction, starting with your diet,” Dr. Freeman tells The Healthy.

(Start with these 12 things to do for a healthy heart attack recovery.)

Preventing a second heart attack.
Some factors that influence your risk of heart disease, like genetics, aren’t directly under your control. However, one thing you do have the power to change is your nutrition. Improving your diet is one of the five best things you can do for your heart, Dr. Freeman says. (In case you’re curious, the other four are 30 minutes of exercise per day, reducing stress, getting seven hours of sleep per night, and making strong social connections.)
This may feel overwhelming to think about as you’re recovering from your first heart attack. Fortunately, the things you do to recover from a heart attack are the same things you do to prevent another one, he says. (It’s also important to stay current with your check-ups. These are the five medical tests for your heart that can save your life.)

Nutrition for heart attack recovery.
Post-heart attack nutrition is all about reducing inflammatory foods while increasing heart-healthy foods, says Kim Rose, RDN, LDN, a registered dietitian nutritionist and licensed dietitian nutritionist who specializes in foods to also avoid lifestyle illnesses,
including heart disease. Certain foods can increase your risk of heart disease and cause inflammation through your body.

List of foods to avoid after a heart attack:

Salt
Eating too much salt raises your blood pressure and increases your risk of heart attack. One sneaky high-sodium food to avoid is packaged chicken breasts, advises Dr. Freeman.
Surprised? Some American meat processors regularly inject poultry with a saltwater solution to make it more flavorful. Look for chicken that hasn’t been brined or injected.

Sugar
The sweet stuff may taste good, but sugar is one of the most inflammatory foods
you can eat—and most of us are eating way, way too much of it, says Dr. Freeman.
Not only is sugar bad for your heart on its own, but it contributes to weight gain and diabetes, which are both significant players when it comes to your risk for heart disease.
Need another reason to get those cravings under control?
Read Here’s What Happens to Your Skin When You Eat Sugar.

Processed meats
Processed foods in general aren’t heart healthy, but you should especially avoid
processed and cured meats like sandwich meats, bacon, sausage, and ham, says Rose.
Plus, also some research suggests processed meats may increase your risk of cancer
as much as smoking does.

Saturated and trans fats
Animal fats, like those found in dairy, and trans fats found in processed foods,
like chips and cupcakes, increase your bad cholesterol and triglycerides—two
indicators of an increased risk for a heart attack, says Dr. Freeman.
The list of foods to eat after a heart attack
“I tell my patients to ‘eat like a peasant’,” says Dr. Freeman. This means selecting unprocessed, plant-based whole foods that are low in fat. (This tip is also one of the
44 things heart docs do to take care of their own hearts.)

Nuts and seeds
These goodies are high in omega-3 fatty acids which help protect the heart, says Rose. Plus, nuts and seeds are easy, portable snacks that don’t require refrigeration—perfect
for keeping a baggie on hand instead of reaching for a candy bar.

Salmon and sardines
Fish are another food high in omega-3 fats and satiating protein, says Rose.
She recommends one to two servings per week is plenty, as some fish, including
“wild” varieties, are contaminated with toxic metals, plastic, and other pollutants.
(For more, read The 7 Best Fish to Eat—and 5 to Never Eat.)

Green veggies
Most vegetables are good for the heart, but the real rock stars are green, leafy vegetables like kale and spinach, says Dr. Freeman. “A big salad full of colorful veggies and drizzled with some olive oil and balsamic vinegar is my go-to for a filling, heart-healthy meal.”

Vinegar
Speaking of vinegar, the dressing on the salad is just as important as the salad itself. According to Dr. Freeman, vinegar in particular adds flavor and an extra dose of protection. “Vinegar has vascular benefits, lowering cholesterol and blood pressure,”
he speaks. Our sibling site, Taste of Home, offers a long list of healthy and delicious vinaigrette recipes.

All spices
Turmeric, black pepper, coriander, cinnamon, basil,
and garlic are just a few of the spices shown to protect your heart.
“Skip the capsules and learn to cook with these spices,” advises Dr. Freeman.
“Many different cuisines use heart-healthy spices as delicious staples, like curries.”

Fiber
Oatmeal, potatoes, beans and other foods packed with fiber support your body as you recover from a heart attack, have heart-protective properties, and help you stay full, so
you won’t be tempted by less-healthy snacks, says Rose. (Read: This Hidden Oatmeal Benefit Could Lower Your Cholesterol, According to Research.)

Fruits
Fruits—particularly those lower in sugar and higher in fiber—are full of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals to keep your — cardiovascular system nourished and strong,
Rose explains. Berries and apples get high praise, but it’s fine to eat grapes, pineapple
& Bananas in moderation, too. (Lots of you loved reading The Banana Health Benefit
You for Sure Weren’t Aware Of, Dietitians Reveal.)

Making the switch:
We all understand that knowing what you should eat, and having those foods end up
on your plate (and in your belly), can be very different things. Rose and Dr. Freeman offer The Healthy readers some pointers to inspire your healthy-eating discipline:
Try “vegan until 6.”  Eat only plant-based foods until 6:00 p.m. and allow yourself
some meat, cheese, or eggs at dinnertime.

If you need some ideas, check out these vegan soup recipes.
Experiment with different recipes… and if you’re stuck, call in a pro. Especially when you’re starting, it can help to have support from a dietitian specializing in heart health
to help your meal-plan and locate great recipes. (To get your grocery list started,
read 11 Potassium-Rich Foods for a Healthy Heart, From Nutrition Experts.)

Let go of “perfect” and focus on “better.”
Any healthy changes you can make will help you. It doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing.
Don’t call it a “diet.” This isn’t something you do until you recover from your heart attack. These nutrition changes can help for the rest of your life.

Olivia Newton-John

For a lot of people going through cancer, attitude is everything, and staying positive is essential.

Olivia Newton-John insists “positive thinking” is vital amid her fight against stage-four metastatic breast cancer. That seems to be the case for Olivia Newton-John, who says
she’s doing great and enjoying every minute of life she can while battling cancer for the third time.
The legendary actress-and-singer was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992, which eventually went into remission, before her cancer returned in 2013 and she was then told in 2017 that the cancer had metastasized to her bones.
Her husband, John Easterling, has been helping her throughout her health journey by growing medicinal cannabis to help ease her symptoms on a raunch in the US, where it’s legal. And the ‘Grease’ star is campaigning for the “healing plant” to be made legal in her home country to help others suffering from chronic pain.

Olivia told Australia’s Who magazine: “Positive thinking is so important
to living a healthy and happy life.”
The 73-year-old star insisted: “Medicinal cannabis is something that should
be available to everyone who is going through a chronic illness or pain.

The ‘Physical’ singer – who has been using various herbs to relieve her pain – previously admitted she is “very lucky” to be married to a “plant medicine man”. She said: “I’m very lucky to be married to a wonderful man who is a plant medicine man, and he has great knowledge. Now he’s growing medicinal cannabis for me, and it just has been wonderful. It helps me in every area.”
Meanwhile, Olivia revealed she found new determination to end cancer following the death of her close friend Kelly Preston – who was the wife of Olivia’s ‘Grease’ co-star John Travolta – in July 2020.
The star said Kelly’s death “strengthened [her] resolve” to help those researching
a cure to the disease through her Olivia Newton-John Foundation.
She said: “Kelly was a lovely woman and incredibly tragic loss.
It just strengthened my resolve to find an end to cancer.
“Losing friends and losing people that you care about just makes me even more determined to do this research.”

“I don’t like the phrase ‘fighting cancer’ because that sets up images of battles and anger.

I choose to see my body as winning, which is a much healthier mental picture,”
Newton-John described her own positive frame of mind in the interview.

Newton-John’s cancer history.
Newton-John was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992. At the time, she received nine months of chemotherapy and a breast removal surgery, called a mastectomy.

Her cancer then entered remission until 2013, at which time her doctors discovered that her cancer had metastasized (spread) beyond her breasts. She overcame the cancer again, only to see the same happen again in 2017, when her doctors discovered a tumor in her sacrum, the bone at the bottom of the spine—another cancer metastasis.

The tumor in her sacrum left Newton-John with a fractured hip, which took over six months to heal. She has since been treated with a combination of conventional therapy, diet, and using marijuana to alleviate cancer-related pain and depression.

The Pants from Grease.
For a lot of people with cancer, finding ways to give back to the cancer community can be
a really important part of the journey. For Olivia Newton-John, who has been enormously generous throughout her cancer journey in building the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre in Australia, that includes selling the pants she wore in her star making role as Sandy in the hit musical movie Grease.

This fall, the iconic trousers and leather biker jacket she wore in the movie will be auctioned and the proceeds donated to her research hospital.
When talking about the pants and jacket, Newton-John said that she tried them on after she first got ill, and was able to shove herself into the pants, even though it was tough, ‘Although I had lost quite a bit of weight at the time because it was just after I’d got ill,’ And that she hopes that the fundraiser will draw in a lot of money, “I hope to raise a million dollars,” she said.
“It won’t be a wrench to part with them because they were never really mine.
They were Sandy’s. And, of course, they’ll help fund my research centre.”
“So, selling them is a joyful thing,” she said about her attitude toward parting with the coveted outfit.
She also said that there was something about aging that made her want to streamline
her life, and get rid of some of the extra items, “And I think as you get older, you want to simplify things. You have so much stuff and that’s not what’s important in life.
Memories are enough.”

Newton-John said she remembers the time around Grease fondly.
Olivia Newton John | John Travolta duet.
“I’m still in contact with a whole bunch of people from Grease,” she said. Didi Conn, who played Frenchy in the movie, remains a close friend. And Olivia and John Travolta, now 65, have kept in touch as well.
“Oh, he was gorgeous; broodingly handsome in a James Dean way and he had an inherent goodness about him, even when he was playing [bad boy] Danny,” said Newton-John of Travolta at age 24 when the pair starred in the movie together.
She could tell there were depths behind his eyes, “John’s sexiness was combined with innocence. He was sweet, sincere and vulnerable. Those blue eyes had pain behind them: he’d recently lost his girlfriend, actress Diana Hyland, to breast cancer.”
And he had a ton of talent as well, she recalled, “He was all the leading men rolled into
one person — he could act, dance and sing — and he had all that charisma, and those incredible movie-star looks.”

Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta dance in the movie Grease, which launched Newton-John to fame in 1978But the two never fell in love, she explained, “I thought he was sexy, of course, and there was undoubtedly chemistry between us. But we both had partners at the time and neither of us would have cheated on them, so there was no romance.”

Cannabis use for pain relief.
When the topic of marijuana brownies came up in the context of the Grease wrap party, Newton-John said, “I didn’t know there were any there, and I would have steered clear
if I had.”
But she made no secret of the fact that marijuana helps her with pain relief,
“that said, cannabis has now become a big part of my life in a wonderful way.
I use it to control the pain in my sacrum.”

Especially when her cancer spread, Newton-John’s husband John helped her ween off other pain killers and use cannabis instead. “John, being a medicine man, grows it for me, and lecturers on its benefits. The pain was excruciating when the breast cancer metastasized [spread] to my sacrum. It was sleep-depriving, crying-out-loud back pain.”
Her husband, John Easterling is an entrepreneur who founded Amazon Herb Company,
a company that sells, among other natural supplements, marijuana products.
It comes as no surprise, then, that Easterling has supported Newton-John using legally-grow medical marijuana and other cannabis products to help ease the pain and stress associated with her advanced breast cancer.
And she wants others to know about the possible benefits of the drug.
“You don’t die from taking cannabis, but you do from taking opiates. And there are millions of people who could benefit from cannabis: it helps with pain, sleep, anxiety; trauma. My dream is to see everyone benefiting from its healing properties.”

Newton-John’s treatment and outlook:
Newton-John’s 70th birthday was a small affair, a “magical party with my husband, family and close friends,” because she needed to be near her hospital in Melbourne, where she is undergoing traditional treatments for cancer, while taking some supplementary herbs. ‘I’ve continued with my regime of herbs and immune-building supplements, and I have regular meetings with my oncologist and my specialist in Los Angeles,’ she says.
As for her outlook as a result of cancer, Newton-John enjoys every minute of her life while she can, “When you get a diagnosis [of secondary cancer], you’re always aware of your mortality. But you appreciate every moment. You don’t take anything for granted.”
She still gets scared, she said, “At times of course I’m frightened. I’m only human.
But I try not to let those negative thoughts in. I don’t think about them.”
But she tries to keep an open mind and tries everything she can, “instead, I spend time with my animals, I chant with my Buddhist friends, I go to mass with my Catholic friends. I keep an open mind about my beliefs. I cover every base.”

BONUS: Pancreatic cancer affects around 62,000 Americans every year and is the
tenth most commonly diagnosed cancer. It’s also one of the deadliest.
You may have heard of it because it claimed the life of Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek.
“The thought of pancreatic cancer does not frighten me,” he said, knowing he was likely
to pass. “I’m not afraid of dying. One thing they’re not going to say at my funeral as part
of a eulogy: ‘He was taken from us too soon.’

I’m 79 years old. I have lived a good life; a full life and I’m nearing the end of that life.
I know that. I’m not going to delude myself.” How can you spot the signs? There are two types of pancreatic cancer: Exocrine tumors (93%) and neuroendocrine tumors (7%). Certain lifestyle factors can make pancreatic cancer far more likely—so try and mitigate the risk of pancreatic cancer by addressing these causes. Read on—and to ensure your health and the health of others, don’t miss these Sure Signs You’ve Already Had COVID.

1 Chronic Pancreatitis

Chronic pancreatitis, often brought on by excessive smoking and alcohol use, is a major factor in causing pancreatic cancer, research shows. “There is a markedly increased risk
of pancreatic cancer in patients with chronic pancreatitis, particularly among those with long-term alcohol use or hereditary pancreatitis,” says Kathleen Berry, MD.

2. Obesity

Obesityparticularly in teenagers and young adults—has been linked to a higher chance of getting pancreatic cancer. “Obesity and diabetes are well-known risk factors for pancreatic cancer via chronic inflammation, excess hormones and growth factors released by body fat,” says Aslam Syed, MD, a gastroenterology fellow at the Allegheny Health Network. “Previously, bariatric surgery has been shown to improve high blood sugar levels in diabetic patients and our research shows that this surgery is a viable way in reducing
the risk of pancreatic cancer in this growing, at-risk group.”
“Our results strongly suggest that to stop and eventually reverse recent increases in pancreatic cancer rates, we will need to do better in preventing excess weight gain in children and younger adults, an achievement which would help prevent many other diseases as well,” says Eric J. Jacobs, Ph.D., senior scientific director of Epidemiology Research at the American Cancer Society in Atlanta.

3. Diabetes

There is mixed evidence whether diabetes leads to pancreatic cancer or pancreatic cancer leads to diabetes, but there is no doubt they are connected. “Although the evidence is mixed in terms of numbers, there are many studies which suggest that a small proportion of people with type 2 diabetes develop cancer of the pancreas within a year following their diabetes diagnosis,” says Daniel Howarth, CNS, head of care at Diabetes UK.

4. Chemical Exposure

A growing body of research is linking pancreatic cancer to environmental chemicals
and heavy metals: “Several studies have linked [pancreatic cancer] incidence to work-
related exposure of various chemicals and metals, such as pesticides, asbestos, benzene, chlorinated hydrocarbons, chromium, and nickel,” according to an article published in Cancer Causes & Control. “These findings lend support for a role of environmental chemicals and heavy metals in the etiology of PC and further support the need for strategies to reduce exposure to these substances.”

5. The #1 Cause of Pancreatic Cancer: Smoking

People who smoke cigarettes are twice as likely to get pancreatic cancer compared to those who don’t smoke. “One in five pancreatic cancers can be still attributed to smoking and most of that to current smoking, which is preventable,” says Dr Maarit Laaksonen, senior lecturer at the Centre for Big Data Research in Health at University of New South Wales. “It’s not just that you are putting yourself at risk, but you are putting yourself at risk for quite a long time after you quit smoking – I think that is one important message.”

6. When Should I See a Doctor?

According to the Cleveland Clinic, symptoms of pancreatic cancer are as follows:

Upper abdominal pain that may spread to the back.

Yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes (jaundice).

Tiredness.

Loss of appetite.

Light-colored poop.

Dark-colored pee.

Weight loss.

Blood clots in the body.

Covid “long-hauler.”

Meet the Doctor Who Got COVID After Vaccination. What She’s Learned | NBC New York

Dr. Evelina Grayver is a cardiologist at Northwell Health on Long Island. Over the past year, this doctor has experienced COVID-19 on every level – as a physician, patient and, unfortunately, grieving granddaughter.
News 4 NY first spoke with this doctor during the grueling initial days of COVID-19.
Dr. Grayver described those days to be the most harrowing of her entire career.
Last year, she said that just upon entering the hospital floors, “you can smell fear.
You smell death.”
Fast forward to the present day, NBC New York’s Linda Gaudino catches up with
Dr. Grayver to discuss her unique situation of contracting coronavirus after vaccination,
and what she has learned over the last 365 days.
Dr. Evelina Grayver ran in the Long Island Half Marathon and, most days, keeps up her training by running six miles.
But weeks after she was infected with COVID-19 last year, her heart felt so weak that walking upstairs at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset left her exhausted.

“I could barely walk up a flight of stairs in the hospital without getting shortness of breath,” she said. “It was very scary.” Grayver, 42, a cardiologist and director of Women’s Heart Health at Northwell, is a victim of “long COVID,” a syndrome that leaves people debilitated months after they get infected with the virus.
So when researchers at Washington University in St. Louis came out with a study last week showing that even young and healthy people who get COVID-19 can suffer long-term cardiovascular problems, it hit home for Grayver.
What to know
A new study by researchers at Washington University in St. Louis shows that even young and healthy people who get COVID-19 can suffer long-term cardiovascular problems.
A cardiologist at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset who ran the Long Island Half Marathon said that weeks after she got COVID-19 she could barely make it up a flight of stairs.
The study is a wake-up call for people who think getting infected with the virus
cannot lead to long-term health problem, a Stony Brook University cardiologist said.

“I think that it is incredibly accurate,” Grayver said of the study.
“It really, really hit home, because it hit me professionally, it hit me personally.”
She is seeing the trend in her own practice, where she estimated about a quarter of her patients developed heart problems after getting COVID-19.
Dr. Hal Skopicki, chief of cardiology and co-director of the Stony Brook Heart Institute, called the study a wake-up call and “rallying cry” that even younger people without major preexisting health problems should try to avoid getting COVID-19 because
they can suffer long-term heart issues after getting infected.

The study, he said, “is profound,” because many people think they can get infected
with COVID-19 and suffer few long-term consequences. “Everybody may be at risk
for cardiovascular complications over time,” after getting the virus, he said.
“This is not the flu,” he added.
The researchers found that even a mild case of COVID-19 can increase a person’s risk of cardiovascular problems for at least a year after diagnosis, according to Nature magazine, which first published the study.
They found that heart failure and strokes were substantially higher in people who had recovered from COVID-19 than in people of similar medical backgrounds who were not infected.
The risk was elevated even for those who were under 65 years of age and lacked risk factors, such as obesity or diabetes, the researchers found.

“Governments and health systems around the world should be prepared to deal with
the likely significant contribution of the COVID-19 pandemic to a rise in the burden of cardiovascular diseases,” Ziyad Al-Aly, the study’s co-author and the chief of research and development for the Veterans Affairs (VA) St. Louis Health Care System, told the journal.
Skopicki said that “we’ve been telling everybody without preexisting diseases or who are young that they’re the ones not really going to be affected and that the vast majority of people who are going to be hospitalized or faced with a chance of dying, that they’re the ones with preexisting conditions.

“They’re the people who are over the age of 65.”

reflecting on the pandemic’s toll on women (news12.com)
The study was based on a database from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
The researchers looked at the cases of 150,000 veterans who survived for at least
30 days after contracting COVID-19.
They compared them to two other groups of uninfected people: five million
people who used the VA medical system during the pandemic, and a similarly
sized group that used the system in 2017, before COVID-19 hit.
One cardiologist interviewed in the Nature journal noted that the study did have limitations.
Heart-disease risk soars after COVID — even with a mild case (nature.com)

Dr. Hossein Ardehali, a cardiologist at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois said people in the group monitored during the pandemic weren’t tested for COVID-19 so some may have had mild infections. In addition, the authors only dealt with patients of VA hospitals, which are predominantly white males, he said.

And What’s Next for Its Use – CBS News

Dr. Avni Thakore, a cardiologist who is president of Catholic Health Physician Partners based in Greenvale, also said she was not surprised “they found some long-term increased cardiovascular risk” among people who had COVID-19.

“What we all know about COVID at this point is that it causes a significant inflammatory response when you have it and sometimes that inflammatory response has some long-lasting effects,” she said.

Grayver, was fully vaccinated in January 2021 and first got infected with COVID-19
a month later in a breakthrough case, said she believes the potential impacts go beyond strokes and heart failure to include abnormalities such as arrhythmias. Besides a weakening of one wall of the heart, she herself suffered a syndrome that caused her heart rate and blood pressure to soar or plummet.
It took her months of pushing herself hard to regain her cardiovascular conditioning,
she spoke.
“It took more work than I’ve ever had to put into my sort of training and getting myself back into that cardiovascular shape,” she said.
Luckily, she is now back in top shape, she said. She was infected with the virus a second time this past Christmas season but suffered a milder case.

She warned people to see a doctor if their COVID-19 symptoms last more than a few weeks.
Skopicki said he is not an “alarmist” and “I don’t believe everybody should be walking around, saying, ‘I had COVID, oh my God, am I going to die of a heart attack?’”
But “this is a rallying cry. This is for those people who are saying, ‘I’m not afraid to get infected’ ” because they think it can’t impact their health long-term.
Thakore and Grayver both said that, with proper medical treatment, hopefully, most
people will make full recoveries, but medical experts are still learning about COVID-19
and its long-term impacts.
COVID-19 continued a general downward trend on Long Island in test results on Monday, as the omicron surge appears to be heading toward a low point barring another spike.
Long Island registered 335 new confirmed cases in test results from Sunday, while the region saw its seven-day average for positivity fall to 3.43%.

Across the state, 48 people died on Sunday of causes linked to COVID-19.

The fatalities included two in Nassau County.

Why You Should Always Flip Your Eggs Upside Down in the Carton.
To Help Them Last Longer, according to an Egg Farmer.
By Nathalie Alonso – Bing video

Putting away the groceries can be a real chore, and you might be reluctant to add yet another step to an already tedious process. But the next time you bring a dozen eggs
home from the supermarket, it might be worth taking a few seconds to turn each of the egg’s upside down inside the carton—that is, with the pointy end down—before storing them in the refrigerator. It’s especially helpful to take this extra step if you expect that
you won’t be using the eggs for a while.

If your jaw is on the floor, we can relate. But storing eggs upside down helps them last longer by preventing the air inside an egg’s shell from coming into contact with the yolks, explains egg farmer Lisa Steele, a fifth-generation chicken keeper from Maine and the author of the blog and the Fresh Eggs Daily Cookbook.
This is important, because that air pocket may harbor potentially harmful forms of bacteria (such as salmonella) that can cause an egg to spoil faster. By turning the egg upside down, you’re introducing more separation between the yolk and the air pocket.
“If there are bacteria inside the air pocket, that can obviously make an egg go bad—plus, the air is going to dry it all up,” says Steel.

Understanding the anatomy of an egg helps explain why this trick works.

Knowing what’s inside an egg’s shell and how the components are arranged inside it makes it easy to see why it is best to store eggs upside down. You already know that inside every egg there is a yolk surrounded by egg whites. The egg whites also keep bacteria away from the nutrient-rich yolk. “The whites of an egg are alkaline versus acidic, so bacteria is not as readily able to form or grow inside the egg whites,” says Steele. “But if they get to the yolk where all the nutrients are, bacteria can certainly thrive and grow.”
What you may not realize, however, is that at the blunt end of the egg, there is an air sac. This air sac grows bigger and bigger as the egg gets older; Steele explains. This is because even though an eggshell may appear pretty solid, it actually has hundreds of thousands of tiny pores that allow air to seep inside. (This is how an unborn chick would be able to breathe inside the egg. It’s also the reason why a fresh egg will sink to the bottom of a glass of water, while an older egg will float.)

Air, of course, is lighter than the other contents of an egg.
Therefore, if you store an egg with the blunt side down, the air sac will be at the bottom, where it will push up against the egg whites and the yolk as it tries to rise to the top.
As an egg gets older, the strands of proteins that tether the yolk to the egg whites begin to break down, making it easier for air to push the yolk around.
If you keep eggs pointy-end down, however, you limit the effects of gravity, because the
air sac is already on top. “You always want the blunt end air sac to be at the top so the air stays where it belongs, and the yolk is safely down below encased in the egg white,” says Steele.

Benefits of proper egg storage.
Because storing eggs upside down helps keep bacteria away from the yolk, the logic
is that if you keep eggs upside down, you are less likely to get sick from eating them.
This is especially important if you like your eggs runny rather than cooked all the way through, or if you are whipping up a batch of homemade mayonnaise or egg nog, both of which call for raw eggs.
(Keep in mind that thoroughly cooking eggs is recommended by the FDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, because heat will kill most bacteria that are present.)
“You’re reducing your chance of getting salmonella probably or other foodborne illnesses, because that bacteria has not had as much chance to get to the yolk,” Steele says.

While Steele says the way you store eggs won’t necessarily affect their taste or nutritional valueeggs are not only a great source of protein, but also vitamins A, B12, D, and E—there is also an aesthetic reason for keeping eggs pointy side down.
By limiting air movement inside the egg, you are also making sure that the yolk stays centered rather than being displaced by air.
The position of the yolk won’t matter if you plan to scramble the eggs or bake with them, but if you’re looking to nail a perfect-looking boiled egg (who hasn’t been there?), it can make all the difference. “If you are hard-boiling eggs or making deviled eggs, they’re not gonna be all wonky,” says Steele. Talk about food for thought.

Here’s what a registered dietitian has to say about eggs, aka nature’s multivitamin: there was a physician on the Doctors Tv show who said there was a study that 2 1/2 eggs per week increased risk of diabetes? I think the findings were related to having too much choline. I eat one a day and now I’m not waiting for a boulder to drop
out of the sky. Life is GOOD (and so are EGGS)!
Eggs have a lot of cholesterol, it’s not so much cholesterol but saturated fat is the first cause of heart disease in occidental countries. When you eat eggs you create atheroma plaque in your arteries and increase significantly your risk of premature death.

I continued to eat eggs all day for vitamins, it’s not like I couldn’t digest it.
It is not just eggs; it is the animal products consumption in general that is problematic.
But the egg is one of the worst, all people who die of heart disease die because of the Western diet. As I explained earlier, the problem is the atheromatous plaque created by cholesterol. In a country like India, we do not see in the vegan population any problems with arteries with people of the same age range and physical form.

So yes, I see a lot of people dying from eating eggs, in fact most of the death is about heart disease. You can’t just blame it on eggs.
If you’re a healthy person and you exercise daily, which not many Americans don’t, you’ll be fine. Of course, you can reduce the damage created by cholesterol with sports or heart bypass, but it’s just healthier and less risky to have a good diet.

Less chance of cancer, heart attack or Alzheimer.
The fact is that your grandma can probably be much healthier than now.
I’m not interested in rare exceptions; I’m interested in large scale study.

The video has no link to studies, it’s total bullshit for cholesterol and for nutrition,
it’s misleading. If you want some good video on eggs.

Eggs: Healthful or Harmful?

Are eggs healthy? A dietitian explains | You Versus Food
By Tracy Lockwood Beckerman

Miguel Angel Ruiz, we have for 50 years every morning 3fried eggs and dr. checkups 3 times a year never been healthier. Yes, blood pressure is fine, so since I can still run 5 miles every morning after breakfast, fried eggs are definitely the way to a longer healthier life. If I’m eating a McDonald burger and running 5miles all morning, is a McDonald burger healthy? The fact is that you cannot properly absorb all the nutrients from the eggs.
The fact is that 4 eggs exceed 4 times the recommended intake of cholesterol per day. The fact is that eggs have way too much saturated fat. If you want to convince me that eggs and meat are healthy, give me a good study that justifies the astronomical rise of heart disease without animal products or your ”good” result of LDL concentration. The video has no link to studies, it’s total bullshit for cholesterol and for nutrition, it’s misleading. If you want some good video on eggs. 50 years of fried eggs and running every day is not enough evidence for you, or the fact that the world’s best athletes and runners love meat and eggs.

That’s not evidence at all, you can be relatively healthy with a bad diet if you do a lot of sports.

You have such a good scientist method to determine what is a good diet..

The Argument in the comment section from this video.
Bro ..really? Atheroma plaque? Eggs are healthy when taken in moderate amount 2whole eggs per day don’t do anything…. if you go full on war mode by taking dozen eggs per day. Then what you are saying might be true….and cholesterol is not all bad. Cholesterol increases fluidity of the membrane….and eggs have good fats (HDL) which are actually good for heart and rich in vitamins. And the thing u are saying atheroma or atherosclerosis happens if you are a sedentary person with no physical activity at all….do u know net protein ratio is 1 free egg white (highest among all proteins) ….so which makes it rich source of protein with less money compared to red meat or chicken…
I’m a doctor and i recommend eggs in a meal…

@Gopi Chand Yes, really, atherosclerotic plaque… blood pressure, the second leading cause of illness after dieting, 2 eggs a day is REALLY NOT moderate. LDL cholesterol is very bad and, as I say, the number one killer in western countries. HDL is easily found in many products that do not harm your kidney. You undoubtedly have arterial plaque with two eggs a day this is retarded. I don’t care about protein, it’s all over the place and you don’t need to take 3 times your daily dose.
I don’t know where you see great protein deficiency in the population. The largest country in the world with a heart attack eats less than an egg a day. It’s all about the right and wrong balance, you have nutrients like protein vitamins b2 b12 vitamin D (which you can easily get from another product) but you damage your kidneys, you have atrophied arteries, too much fat, salmonella and this can lead to prostate cancer, colorectal cancer and diabetes. I don’t call it a good and healthy product…

1) What is the protein requirement for adults?  @poiro _T
2) What is the normal caloric requirement for a sedentary worker per day?
3) How much can u get from 2 eggs? ..LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol …
What’s the normal limit and how much are u getting from an egg? atrophied arteries?
(Atrophy is a term used for muscles, when they lose muscle cells)..salmonella infection through eggs?
Ya it might be if you are eating half cooked or raw eggs which are contaminated (0.00005% chances.)

Which country are you referring to the largest country… India?
If so, u must be knowing about 90% prevalence of anemia in females, and u must be knowing about health programmes to promote nutrition which includes eggs btw) …
i like to know what’s your input about these. please don’t tell me by eating eggs u damage kidneys..lol…. don’t take me wrong but u put link to some YouTube channel as a proof to say eggs are bad that itself is a very bad proof. It’s like saying earth is flat bcoz there are some YouTube channels and researchs suggesting it….and stop spreading misinformation. ur saying protein is everywhere.
By means u r saying nuts, soya, paneer, mushroom (vegetarian sources) which are also good …the reason for high prevalence of cardiovascular disease in western countries is not bcoz of eggs. its bcoz of consumption of high red meat and high calorie food (burgers, pizzas, coke) and a low physical activity. High cholesterol isn’t a result of consuming a lot of dietary cholesterol, it’s a result of hypothyroidism which comes from eating too little food which suppresses your metabolism. In fact, cholesterol is actually good for you because it’s essential for your body (I will eat poached egg and skip fried eggs.)

@Olivia Clark Okay so you have the solution to the first cause of death, it just needs some iodine pill and it’s over and obese eat well enough, so they have no thyroid problem and vegans have the same chance of dying of a heart attack, okay…
For real, look at yourself for some study on this field that isn’t financed by any meat industry I hope you know other cultures consume eggs, not just westerners. Also, you can get eggs that come from chickens that have lived in a stress-free environment, as well as eat a healthy diet, you are not that funny, but you are smart and talk very clearly.

Diane Sawyer Children of the Mountain
by Betty Dotson-Lewis
February 21, 2009

“A Hidden America: Children of the Mountains,” a special edition of “20/20”.
The show’s focus was on Central Appalachia, things you never expected to see happen here, in America.” Specifically, the part of the region that lies in correspondent Diane Sawyer’s native Kentucky. A network team spent 2-years looking at the region’s poverty and related problems and reported them largely through the lives of four children.
(ABC photo by Heidi Gurman)

Thursday’s excerpt on “Good Morning America” focused on dental problems, with emphasis on what some dentists call a regional addiction to Mountain Dew, the heavily sugared and caffeinated drink made by PepsiCo. “The biggest offender may be acid,” Sawyer reported, noting dental research that showed Mountain Dew caused “two to five times the damage of regular colas.”

Sawyer read a statement from the company calling the report “irresponsible news” and saying people should exercise more responsibility for their oral health. Friday morning, she reported “an eruption of reaction” to the report, on both sides, re-aired parts of it, and interviewed Dr. Edwin Smith of Barbourville, Ky., a dentist who spends heavily from his own pocket to provide free dental care to poor children.

“The thing that is unique about Mountain Dew drinkers is they keep a bottle handy”
and drink frequently from it, Smith said. “You’re soaking your teeth in sugar all day.” As for Pepsi’s view, he said, “I think it’s blaming the victim, People could do a better job, of course.” Asked what he would like to see Pepsi do, he said, “I’d like for them to help us educate people. … They could help fund our program to help educate kids and restore some of these problems we see.” Sawyer replied, “We’ll go back to Pepsi.”

While some in the region fear the 20/20 report will be overly negative and buttress stereotypes, the excerpts we have seen so far on the air and the ABC Website all have a dose of hope and a degree of respect for the people profiled. Promoting the full report, Sawyer said Friday morning, “You’re going to meet some extraordinary people who will rededicate your hope.”

In an interview with the main ABC affiliate that serves the region, Lexington’s WTVQ, she said she wanted to take the story beyond stereotypes and show the subjects’ “fighting spirit.” Sawyer was born in Glasgow, Ky., which is not in Appalachia but is amid some counties that Congress has designated as Appalachian. Her grandparents were from a few counties east, where the hill country of the Highland Rim or Eastern Pennyroyal region meets the Appalachian coalfield.

She told Katya Cengel of The Courier-Journal in Louisville, where she grew up,
that “she felt at home with the accents” she found a few counties still farther east, in Southeastern Kentucky. “Those are the accents I love,” she said.
“Those are my grandparents and great-grandparents. … I love this region so much,
I love these accents, I love the music; I love the mountains. I feel that this is my DNA.”

Is Something MISSING in Your Life? ” #JESUS #GOD #Gospel #Spirituallydead #Bornagain

WHAT IS MISSING?
My Friend, are you dead or alive?
Do you ever feel that there is something important missing from your life?
A vital part of your existence that isn’t there, and has never been there?
An empty void and longing, deep within the depths of your soul, crying out to be filled?
If you do not know the LORD JESUS CHRIST on a personal basis, that is the problem. GOD, the GIVER and SUSTAINER of life, is missing from your life. The Bible says that without JESUS CHRIST as your personal SAVIOR, you are “dead in trespasses and sins.” (Ephesians 2:1b)

HOW DID IT HAPPEN?
In the Garden of Eden, before man’s fall, Adam and Eve were alive, that is, they were “spiritually” alive. They walked in perfection, and oneness with GOD. “And the LORD GOD commanded the man, saying, of every tree of the garden thou may freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eat thereof thou shalt surely die.” (Genesis 2:16-17)
On that day, when they disobeyed GOD and ate of the fruit, they died a “spiritual” death. Sin entered in, and they were separated from GOD. Since then, every one of us has been born into sin. “Wherefore, as by one man (Adam) sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so, death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:” (Romans 5:12) “Behold, I was sharpening in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.” (Psalm 51:5)
“As it is written, there is NONE righteous, no, not one:” (Romans 3:10) “For ALL have sinned and come short of the glory of GOD;” (Romans 3:23) The results of sin are a spiritual death, a physical death, and if you die without JESUS CHRIST, an eternal death. This is eternal separation from GOD in a Devil’s Hell.

WHAT HAS BEEN DONE ABOUT IT?
JESUS CHRIST, the GOD-MAN, was not a partaker of man’s sinful bloodline. HE was perfect, sinless, righteous, Holy, born of a virgin, and GOD in the flesh. “In the beginning was the WORD, and the WORD was with GOD, and the WORD was GOD. The same was in the beginning with GOD. ALL things were made by HIM; and without HIM was not anything that was made.” (John 1:1-3 “And the WORD was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld HIS glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the FATHER,) full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)
HE came to seek and to save that which was lost. HE offered HIMSELF the perfect, sinless sacrifice unto GOD, to redeem man from the sin which separates him from GOD. HE came to give life back to men. “. . . I AM coming that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that hears MY WORD, and believes on HIM that sent ME, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. Verily, verily, I say unto you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the SON Of GOD: and they that hear shall live.” (John 5:24-25)
” Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the Gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that CHRIST died for our sins according to the Scriptures; and that HE was buried, and that HE rose again the third day according to the Scriptures: and the HE was seen of Cephas (Peter), then of the twelve: after that, HE was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; ” 1st.Corinthians 15:1-6a

NOW IT IS UP TO YOU!
My Friend, do you hear HIS voice calling you through these Scriptures? HE wants to breathe life into you.
This receiving of new life from JESUS CHRIST is what HE called being “born again.” We see this in the Bible when JESUS tells Nicodemus, “. . . Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of GOD . . . That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the SPIRIT is Spirit.” (John 3:3, 6)
My Friend, repent! Turn to GOD from your sin and embrace the LORD JESUS CHRIST by faith and be born of GOD.
GOD promised in Romans 10:9, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the LORD JESUS, and shalt believe in thine heart that GOD hath raised HIM from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” When you turn to GOD, the missing link will be found, and the empty void will be filled. You will be one with GOD.
HE will be your FATHER, and you will be HIS son/daughter. You can REJOICE with us in this great truth forever. AMEN. “He that hath the SON hath life; and he that hath not the SON of GOD hath not life.” (John 5:12)

If you have made a decision to accept CHRIST as your personal LORD and SAVIOR after reading this post.
Please let me know so that I and the angels in Heaven can REJOICE over one sinner that repents. https://wordoftruthlighthouse.blogspot.com AND The Gospel in 21 Different Languages @ www.theabalonekid.com/id187.html Your servant in CHRIST, Julie.

Want to Be Happier, Healthier, and Wealthier?

The #1 Way to Lengthen Your Life, Says Science

Is it time to reframe our thoughts about aging and happiness?

Some people live under a rock confined to their own thoughts ..
Not able to free think on their own!!!

As long as humans have been alive, we’ve been interested in how to potentially
extend the experience

For many years, increasing your lifespan was the provenance of speculation and science fiction. But recently, actual science has determined that making certain changes to your routine can demonstrably extend your life by years. Here’s the latest on the #1 way to lengthen your life, according to science. Read on to find out more—and to ensure your health and the health of others, don’t miss these Sure Signs You’ve Already Had COVID.

A new study has found that you can extend your life up to 13 years by eating the right diet.
In research published this month in the journal PLOS Medicine, scientists calculated how much longer a person might live if they replaced the “typical Western diet” — one that’s heavy in processed foods and red meat — with an “optimized diet” that involved no red or processed meat or sugar-sweetened beverages, reduced dairy and egg consumption, and more fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and nuts. The researchers found that if a man started eating the optimized diet at age 20, he could add 13 years to his life.
a woman who did the same could lengthen her life by a decade.

And it’s never too late: Men and women who started the healthier diet at age 60 could lengthen their lives by nine and eight years, respectively. Even 80-year-old people could add about 3.5 years to their lives by adopting a plant-based diet.

RELATED: Over 60? Here’s How to Live Decades Longer

1. Could Reduce Heart Disease, Diabetes, Cancer.
“The estimated life extension is mainly due to a reduction in the risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer,” says the study’s author, Lars Fadnes of the University of Bergen in Norway. “The notion that improving diet quality would reduce the risk of chronic disease and premature death is long established, and it only stands to reason that less chronic disease and premature death means more life expectancy,” Dr. David Katz, a specialist
in preventive and lifestyle medicine and nutrition, told CNN.
The team also looked at a “feasibility” diet, a sort of compromise between the typical Western diet and the optimized diet. Twenty-year-old men and women would live
seven and six years longer on the feasibility diet, respectively, while 80-year-old men
and women would add about 1.5 years to their lives.

2. Cut That Sugar
Added sugar is the number one factor in your risk of dying from diabetes.
The link between increased sugar and diabetes risk is right up there with “smoking causes lung cancer” on the list of immutable medical truths— despite what soda manufacturers are trying to tell us. (You’ll read more about sugar-based hocus-pocus in the next chapter.) But researchers at the Mayo Clinic have come right out and said that added fructose—either as a constituent of table sugar or as the main component of high-fructose corn syrup—may be the number one cause of diabetes, and that cutting sugar alone could translate into a reduced number of diabetes deaths the world over.

3. Exercise Also A Life-Extender
That study joins other research published recently about an easy switch that could
extend life: Getting just 10 minutes of daily exercise. A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that people over 40 who add only that amount of activity to their everyday routines could live longer.
“We know exercise is good for us. This study provides additional evidence of the
benefits at the population level: if all adults in the United States (over age 40) were to exercise just a bit more each day, a large number of deaths could be prevented each year,” epidemiologist Pedro Saint-Maurice, the study’s lead author, told CNN.

4. Add 10 Minutes of Activity to Each Day
“We have reported previously that even a little bit of exercise can result in health benefits,” Saint-Maurice said. “We can make our nation healthier by encouraging everyone to add an additional 10 minutes of activity or more each day.” And to live your healthiest life, don’t miss this life-saving advice I’m a Doctor and Here’s the #1 Sign You Have Cancer.

The story of the Annie Moses Band began in a cotton field in North Texas during the Great Depression. Annie Moses, our great grandmother, picked cotton for a wealthy landowner and scrimped and saved to pay for a few piano lessons for our grandmother, Jane.
Jane learned from her mother’s sacrifice. Years later, she pinched pennies so our mother, Robin, could learn piano, a pursuit that took her to Oklahoma City University. There she met our father, Bill, a jazz man who loved chord progressions and arranging. Together they wrote a steady stream of extraordinary songs, including the Sandi Patti hit,
“Make His Praise Glorious.”

While Sandi was singing the words of the Psalmist (“praise the Lord with strings!”),
we were putting those words into practice – literally. Growing up, our parents worked hard to give us the best musical education possible. It was a trajectory that took us all
the way to the Juilliard School.
In 2002, our family came to a crossroads – do we stay on the classical path
or take a risk and make our own music?
The answer was the Annie Moses Band, an eclectic sound that reflected our family’s unique blend of roots music and classical polish. Over 15 years later, the Annie Moses Band has recorded more than a dozen albums, produced Telly-nominated PBS specials, traveled to Europe and Asia, and performed on stages as diverse as Carnegie Hall and
the Grand Ole Opry.
But the journey didn’t stop with our own music. In 2010 we founded a non-profit,
Annie Moses Foundation, which nurtures the artistic development of families.
The Annie Moses Foundation supports our local Conservatory, our online music curricula, and our annual Summer Music Festival here in Music City. Pouring our talents into the lives of young musicians is deeply fulfilling. Science Says Start Seeing ‘The Future You’ in the Right Way
By Jeff Haden

Want to Be Happier, Healthier, and Wealthier?
The more connection you feel between who you are now and who you will be,
the greater your later life satisfaction and well-being.
Imagine yourself 10 or 20 years in the future. Not physically–because 40-year-old me would not have been happy with 60-year-old me–but in terms of who you are inside.
How you answer that question tends to put you in one of two basic camps.

Some people see themselves as basically the same:
Where you live might change, your profession might change, your circumstances might change, but deep inside you see yourself as roughly the same. As social psychologists
put it, you assume a strong continuity between today you and 20-years-from-now you.
Others see their future selves as very different from who they are today.
They see little connection or continuity.
They assume–or at least hope–that someday they will become very different.

My guess is you see where this is going:
People who think their future self will be very different tend to be less “responsible”
in terms of behavior. Research bears out that assumption.
One study shows people with greater “present-future continuity” tend to exercise more.
Other shows show people tend to be more financially prudent and more likely to save money.
Other shows show those people tend to behave more ethically, both personally and professionally.
Other shows show the degree of continuity you feel with your future self can actually predict your overall life satisfaction and well-being 10 years later.
As the researchers write:
When people are better connected to their future selves, they have an enhanced ability
to recognize the consequences of their present-day decisions on their future selves.
And that’s going to help them put the brakes on these behaviors.
Intuitively that makes sense. When I was young, I thought my future self would
somehow be different: That he would decide to get fit. Or save for retirement.
Or just quit acting like such a doofus.

Who I was then and who I would someday be? Big disconnect.
Slowly, though, I realized that what I did today built the foundation for what I would become. That who I would be in 10 or 20 years would be the accumulation of the actions
I would take in the years to come.
That someday being fit, relatively financially secure, or a lot less of a jerk–
who I would be would result from the choices I made on a daily basis?
Choices that would either work for or against my hopes for the future me.
Because consistency, not intensity, is what produces long-term results.
Want to someday be a successful entrepreneur? You won’t get there by assuming
that someday you’ll magically be different. What you do now–gaining skills, forging connections, analyzing opportunities, etc.–will accumulate over time, and help you get there.

Want to lose weight? The choices you make now–improving your diet, exercising more, etc.–will accumulate over time and help you get there. If you hope your future self will
be smarter, or kinder, or wealthier, or more generous, or more successful–whatever you imagine your future self to be–see that person not as a stranger, but as fundamentally
the person you are today.

Except different, due to the choices you make today.
And every day.

COOKING WITH A PURPOSE
Imagine an ancient Chinese philosopher, with his depth of knowledge of how nature and food work and their impact on humans and the planet, in the kitchen with your Italian Nonna, with all her wisdom of nature, food and nurturing. Imagine them cooking and talking together, laughing and comparing notes on food and wellness. That’s how I cook and live my life. It’s like having two little angels on my shoulders, working together creating the soul of cooking, eating and wellness.

I love my way of thinking about food.

It takes the best of both worlds (along with my scientific nutrition facts and stats),
and boils them down to their essential tenets and allows us to enjoy the best of both philosophies. Lusciously esoteric but grounded in the sexy, delicious cooking style
known as the Mediterranean diet, with a dusting of science from conventional nutrition.
It becomes a winning combination allowing us to understand how food affects us so we can cook deliciously, creating the wellness we want. With dishes like Skillet Pasta e Fagioli, Black Rice Salad with Roasted Cherry Tomatoes, Vegan Bouillabaisse, and Pink Prosecco Cake, The Macroterranean Way is a luscious way to eat your way to wellness.

The Macroterranean Way: Back to the Cutting Board: Pirello, Chef Christina: 9798771876986: Amazon.com: Books

Christina Pirello’s culinary zeal goes back to her Irish-Italian family in New Jersey where cooking was the center of home life. Her mother was ahead of her time: into the freshest ingredients, recycling, and alternative health.
Christina’s first food job was at a coffee shop at the hotel restaurant where her dad worked as a butcher. She was reprimanded for spilling coffee on a customer, but couldn’t be fired because of her dad, so they demoted her to scrubbing vegetables for three months.
Christina wanted to learn to be a chef, but this was a time when women were not given the same opportunities in the culinary industry as men. When she didn’t quit, the chef tried to deter her with three months of taking the innards out of chickens.

Christina had already rebelled by going vegetarian at age fourteen.
“My father unconsciously set my feet on the path towards veganism. He had the chance to work in a slaughterhouse and couldn’t do it; he could not kill innocent animals—his words that I will never forget. His vulnerability sealed the deal for me, and I was done with meat. I will always be grateful to him for that.”
The chicken job disgusted her; she persevered. Eventually her determination impressed the boss so much that he taught her everything from making sauces to baking. But by then Christina didn’t want a food career; she was into eating processed junk food and decided University of Miami was the place for her to earn her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in fine arts. Her artistic interest is evident in everything from her Italian espresso cup collection to the eccentric paintings that adorn the walls of the Pirellos’ quaint Philly rowhouse. Christina pays attention to detail and finds the treasure in nearly everything.

But in Miami she was not yet committed to food as her creative medium.
Everything changed at age twenty-six when Christina was diagnosed with leukemia.
Her prognosis was not promising at all: She was given 9–months to live. Being from a family where most people don’t live past sixty-six, she didn’t turn to them for encouragement.
A dear friend asked her to meet his buddy who claimed to know how food cures cancer.
The buddy, Robert Pirello, introduced Christina to macrobiotics and plant-based eating and then proposed marriage. She said “Yes!” to him for an amazing partnership, personal and professional.
Robert Pirello had a crazy idea to make a healthy-cooking show starring his wife, and Christina Cooks was born in 1997. Robert is the flax seed that binds together the Christina Cooks empire, including an award-winning PBS television series, eight books, healthy-travel tours, cooking classes, and followers all around the world. He encourages her to dream big, which has paid off. For this dynamic duo the mission is helping people learn to improve their health as well as their carbon footprint by eating more consciously.

Despite their benefits, Christina learned quickly that plant foods are often served
as boring and unappealing. She returned to her culinary talents to make things delicious and coupled that with a second master’s degree—in food science and nutrition.
Her nine months to live became nine months to “spontaneous regression.” Her cancer has stayed in remission for eighteen months after her diagnosis. Instead of simply accepting it as a miracle, in 1988 Christina became a vegan macrobiotic chef to help save others. A lifelong athlete, Christina took it upon herself to win this challenge and make healthy food that would impress everyone, even Italian Nonna’s!
In its first year, the PBS television show Christina Cooks was broadcast throughout sixty-nine viewing areas (twelve is considered good). The chef’s delicious recipes, wacky sense
of humor, and whimsical personality earned her a Mid-Atlantic regional Emmy award in 1998. She didn’t even know that she was being nominated—her show producers applied for her. She never reapplied, she said, because one Emmy was enough. Her most prized award is the emails she gets from people every day about the positive impact she has had on their health.

Christina Cooks relaunches in January 2020.
The major difference with the first season is that now Christina is an even stronger vegan. The show has always been vegan, but in the past, she wasn’t allowed to “inflict her views” on show staff. Now she’ll only buy vegan food for the crew.
Christina understands that veganism is more than just wholesome food. Even if you don’t care about your health, you do care about the future world for children and grandchildren. For Christina, veganism is where compassion starts, not where it ends. She extends harmlessness to all parts of life, and tries to live as low waste as possible with minimal paper products, organic laundry detergent, etc.

Robert is wholeheartedly sharing the lifestyle.
The Pirellos work well together because Robert also comes from a big Italian family
and cares about health, animals, and the environment. He has the business sense and marketing savvy, while she has the culinary enthusiasm and experience. They both love healthy travel. At age eighteen, Christina chaperoned her younger brother and his friends on a trip to Europe and at the end of the trip she spontaneously decided to live in Italy for nine months. She’s loved it ever since. Robert had his first experience of Italy at age fifty.
Now she and Robert arrange group travel tours to countries such as Italy, Croatia, and Spain. Guests stay at historic villas, dine on healthy meals, explore cultural sites, and meet locals. Robert cooks breakfast (his morning specialty is a feast), and Christina cooks either lunch or dinner; they also go out to restaurants for some meals. Everything served at the villas is vegan, but people can order what they want at restaurants.

There is something about eating healthy in a new place that changes people, she notes.
Three days in, even the hardcore “carnivorous” spouses order vegan, even though there
is no pressure put on them. Christina attributes — the program’s success to the fact that traveling broadens your perspectives about the world and other cultures.
The owner of a popular Philadelphia meat-centric restaurant went on a Pirellos-
led trip and ate vegan food for the entire two weeks. If he can do it, anyone can!
The Pirellos’ various endeavors are proof of the power that tasty vegan food has;
it can build bridges and transform lives.
