The “terrible simplifiers” is a fairly famous line from the legendary Swiss historian
Jacob Burckhardt. Born 20 days after Karl Marx into a patrician family in 1818, he was a congenital conservative that turned increasingly concerned about the character and even nature of modernity around the time Marx published the Communist Manifesto and the revolutions of 1848. In short, modernity was a double-edged sword.
The great American historian of Germany Felix Gilbert provided an excellent analysis
of Burckhardt in History: Politics or Culture, Reflections on Ranke and Burckhardt.
Ranke, whom Burckhardt studied under, is known as the father of modern source-based history and we could perhaps call Burckhardt the father of modern cultural history, the latter of which has, of course, come to be dominated by leftwing and Marxist historians.
Referring to Burckhardt’s most famous book published in 1878, Gilbert writes, “Rejection of the course of modern culture involved a paradox that underlines Burckhardt’s work on The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy.
He presents this period as a high point in the development of European culture, and at the same time as the root of a culture that became cheap, corrupt, and amoral.
The solution of this contradiction lies in what Burckhardt considered to be the distinguishable attribute of the modern world: the discovery and widened use of man’s capacities, in consequence of the discovery of the individual and individuality.
The development of individuality opened the way to the great achievements of the Italian Renaissance in art and literature, because it provided a new vision of man’s faculties and possibilities.
However, this new vision also led to ruthless political actions and ‘unrestrained egoism in behavior.’ Side by side with profound corruption appeared artistic splendor and achievements of the noblest harmony.”

One might note I’ve continuously referred to Michael Howard’s recent Liberation or Catastrophe, which obviously expresses a similar theme, although Howard was a lifelong Labour Party supporter. The greatest problem as I see it today is that this time the terrible simplifiers are coming from the Anglo world.
