It’s A Flyer Thing

The Difference Between Flier and Flyer:

But while we’re sure we know what a Flyer is, there is some confusion about how exactly to spell it. Is it “Flyer,” or is it “Flier?” Or is it that the different versions are used for different meanings? “Flyer” can also refer to a flying person or animal, for example. The answer to all of these questions is yes. “Flier” is an acceptable way to spell the word, as is “Flyer.”

Marion Local High School is a public high school located in Maria SteinOhio.
It currently has approximately 286 students enrolled. The students are from several surrounding communities, including Cassella, St. Rose, Osgood, Chickasaw, St. Sebastian, Yorkshire, and Maria Stein. These communities were served by a series of local one-room school houses that still stand in Chickasaw, St. Rose, St. Sebastian and Minster.
In 1922 a 2-year high school was established in Maria Stein and in 1930 a 3-story brick school (named St. John’s School) was completed directly across from St. John’s Church.
In 1955 the Marion Local Consolidated School District was established and charged with strengthening the educational opportunities for students in the 6 member communities. The Marion Local School District built a new high school, the Marion Local High School, in Maria Stein, Ohio in 1957.

Notability

Marion Local High School is notable statewide for its athletic prowess.
Since 2000, the school has won 13 state football championships, setting a state record previously held by St Ignatius High School of Cleveland, Ohio.[2] In addition, the school has won 9 additional state championships in various sports since 1975, placing it in the upper echelon of state athletic programs. What is equally remarkable is that this success has fostered a “can do” attitude among students leading to academic and musical success described below. Despite its small size the school is ranked academically in the upper 20% of high schools in the state.[3]

Athletics

Marion Local is a member of the Midwest Athletic Conference. They have captured more than 50 league championships in various MAC-sanctioned sports since 1973. Marion Local has the most playoff-era football state championships in the state of Ohio at 13.

From rural farm town Maria Stein, football juggernaut Marion Local towers over Ohio
He came to Marion in 1999 as a math teacher and football coach, with no record…just a pedigree.  His father, Bill, had been the long-time, and successful, coach at Allen East
High School, achieving 219 wins of his own over 33 seasons.
Our former Press Pros colleague, and former Marion Local athletic director, Stan Wilker, once told me this about the interview and hiring process of Goodwin.  “Tim Goodwin is
the reason why you never underestimate someone or take them for granted.  There was a quality and commitment about Tim that none of us could ever have imagined.  We hired him on a hunch.”

The same reason you pay attention to the old adage…still waters run deep and the well never runs dry. In twenty-four-plus seasons as coach of the Flyers his now 300 wins have amounted to an average of 12.5 wins per seasons, that in addition to the Flyers’ current streak of 39 consecutive wins.  He’s also only one of eight who have won 300 games while coaching at a single school!

More astounding, Goodwin has won an unheard-of percentage of 13 titles in
16 title game appearances, losing only to Kirtland (twice) and Columbus Grove.
Moreover, Coach Goodwin has won 95 of 107 total playoff games (88.7%) through the 2022 season, an accomplishment about which rival coaching colleagues can only shake their heads. Goodwin, true to his nature, rarely calls attention to the record, and often downplays his role in such unprecedented success.

The Goodwins…Tim followed the coaching footsteps of his father,
Bill (background), who won 219 games at Allen East High School
in his 33 seasons at one school.
.
“I have some great assistant coaches here now helping players develop,” he said recently, following win #299. “I’m so excited about the future with these great coaches that I have. It’s so much fun for me…nice to see people take ownership.”
Which would lead you to believe that there’s no immediate end in sight to his reign.
The subject of frequent conjecture over the years about leaving Marion for bigger, more lucrative coaching positions around Ohio, Goodwin shared with me in a column published five years ago: “I have no reason to leave.  I have everything I need right here (at Marion).”

Which, if you know him personally, amounts to community, character, values, and an obvious and understated work ethic, values that can be found, as well, in Marion’s reputation for scholastic success.
Which is one more indication of his appreciation, loyalty, and commitment to the long haul – something rare in the modern culture of coaching, administration, and teaching.
Years ago, he left the classroom to become the high school principal at Marion, a position he manages with the same calculated vision that guides Flyer football.  Proving, again,
the wisdom of never underestimating someone, or taking them for granted.

Everybody talks Coach Tim Goodwins 300 + Career Wins in only 24 Seasons.
However, I will blog about his list of 48 impressive loses throughout those years.

In 1999 Coach’s first year with the ML Flyers lost to Sidney Lehman who finished 8 – 4, by a score of 14 – 7 St Henry 11-3, 23-26 Delphos St Johns 15-0, 7-24 — and again Delphos St John’s 8-38. 2000 DSJ 13-1, 21-42, however, M.L. beat them the second time for their first birth to Massillon and 2001 Coldwater 11-3, 7-21 was their only loss on the season and back-to-back State Championships.

Then in 2002 Coldwater who was 11-1 beat the Flyers 14-21 and Hardin Northern 14-1, 16-26 by Drew Snow’s big game in the rain. 2003 was also an extremely competitive year with Coldwater finishing 11-2 and a game score 0-7. Versailles probably having their best team 15-0 in the Al Hetrick winning era at that school and Marion Local losing 0-37 and DSJ 11-3 and Marion Local losing 26-28 to a 15-0 Columbus Grove State Championship on a go to running back Blaine Maag.

2004 brought an adversity-stricken year going 5-5 Troy Christen 7-4 beat ML 12 – 19, Coldwater 13-1, 14-24 St. Henry 14-1, 0-28 Minster 5-5, 7-21 and DSJ 6-4, 7-3 capped off a season that stated you can’t win them all season.

Hard Luck followed the team in 2005 with Coldwater 15-0 winning state lead by Ross Homan and ML losing to them by a lopsided score of 7-38 Versailles 9-2. 10-28.and DSJ 13-2 twice by scores of 14-17 and 21-28. 2006 gave Local two losses to Coldwater 11-1. 6-27 and St Henry 14-1, 0-31. 2007 gave Goodwin, Marion local it first undefeated season and a Division V State Championship as an underdog over Youngstown Ursuline 2007 OHSAA Football DV State Championship: Marion Local vs. Youngstown Ursuline – YouTube

2008 provided Goodwins coach team a year of reversal with an early season loss to Coldwater 12-1 and a 14-33 loss. Anna in Week 10 beat ML 16-6 and turned out to be fair play in the playoffs in Week 11 with a Marion Local 13-3 victory when it counted. Then losing 0-35 to Hometown Findlay Liberty-Benton (14-1) who went on toe be the State Runner Up to Youngstown Ursuline (15-0)
In 2009 was one of Goodwins most abysmal injury riddles years we witness the Flyers losing 5 straight games from week 4 to 8 Coldwater (13-2) 19-42 St Henry (9-4) 7-10 and St John’s (14-1) 14-35 New Bremen (5-5) 14-17

Versailles (6-4) 26-28 then making a run in the playoffs all the while losing in the State SemiFinals to # St John’s (14-1) 7=13 in OT,

With three loses in 2010 was a somewhat disappointing season with three loses they were doubled up to Coldwater (11-4) 21-42

St John’s (15-0) beat Marion 13=7 again by the same score as last year and to end the season were upset by Minster (7-6) 26-30.

In 2011 in the first of a now established program ML lost to Lima Shawnee in OT 7-13 and getting beaten by DSJ 14-21I consider 2012 the toughest winning season for the Flyers because after losing to a 5-5 Versailles Tiger team 14-24 and losing to Coldwater 15-0 that season 0-27 they ended the season with 7 straight wins and went on to beat Newark Catholic 12-3 in a brutal State Championship Game 28-21 D6 State Championship: Marion Local vs. Newark Catholic – YouTube
Losing only 8 times in the next decade Marion Local began 2013 and 2014 with an undefeated season then having an unbeaten a 43-game streak broken in 2015 by Coldwater 15-0, 14-17 before going on and losing to Kirtland 14-1 20-22 in the State Championship game. In another impressing upstart season Marion Local lost to old fowl and 2016 State Runner Up Coldwater 13-2, 14-17 before running the table and beating Cuyahoga Heights 14-1, 21-17 in an Exciting State Championship game.  Marion Local vs Cuyahoga Heights Football – YouTube

With another undefeated season in 2017 and redemption against Kirtland, 2018 opened with a loss to Coldwater 10-3, losing 20-26 in 2 OT then another loss to Kirtland 15-0, 16-7 in the State Championship Game.

Goodwins teams never one to shy away from a challenge then were beaten early on in 2019 to Division 3 at Columbus Bishop Watterson 7-3, 7-31 and Minster 9-2 beat them at Booster Field in Maria Stein 26-27 before Local going onto to another State Championship against Lucas

2020 Started out with a Virus Shorten Season with Marion going 6-0 during the season and losing to New Bremen 10-2, 17-24 before the—> Cardinals went on  to their first State Championship in school history.

Since that bitter defeat at home in the playoffs Marion Local hasn’t experience defeat with also a to date 43 game win streak. Bing Videos | Mike Reid – Walk On Faith – YouTube.
