Alzheimer’s Impact

EN ESPAÑOL | GENES, LIFESTYLE AND AGE ARE SOME OF THE FACTORS KNOWN TO PLAY A ROLE IN ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE, BUT MORE STUDY IS NEEDED.

What We Know (and Don’t Know) About Alzheimer’s Disease.
Research has delivered only limited insights into causes and treatments.
by Kathleen Fifield, AARP.

Here’s what we know:

The risk factor. Age is the greatest risk factor for Alzheimer’s.
For most, symptoms first appear after age 65, though brain-imaging scans show that
the buildup of specific types of proteins related to Alzheimer’s can start wreckage long
before visible symptoms emerge.

Some of the genes linked to Alzheimer’s.
One is APOE, which has several forms. APOE e2 reduces your risk of Alzheimer’s,
while another, APOE e4, increases your risk. If you receive a copy of APOE e4 from
each of your parents, you’ll have the greatest odds of getting Alzheimer’s.

How you live matters.
Researchers have determined that nutritious food, exercise, sleep, socializing and other positive aspects of life are good preventive medicine for Alzheimer’s. One study showed that life changes can reduce your chance of developing Alzheimer’s by 35 percent.

Who you are matters.
Socioeconomic factors, including education, income and even where you live,
play a role in whether Alzheimer’s takes hold. Race matters, too: African Americans
are twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s as Caucasians; Hispanics are 1.5 times more likely.

But we don’t know:

What causes the disease?
Scientists have yet to learn what triggers the early deposit of abnormal proteins in
the brain or how it damages brain neurons. It’s also unknown why a small percentage
of people who have plaque buildup don’t end up getting Alzheimer’s.

How these genes work.
Researchers have yet to figure out the complex genetic processes that are behind Alzheimer’s. Scientists only know the disease is likely the result of not just one gene
but of dozens of genes — and of the complex interactions that occur among them.

A medicine that works.
There are no drugs available to cure or slow down Alzheimer’s, though some may briefly help with its symptoms. Fully 99 percent of clinical trials of Alzheimer’s drugs fail, and some major pharmaceutical companies have stopped trying to develop this class of drugs.

What other factors might matter?
More study is needed to determine if social factors are causal or if they somehow help build up resilience to the disease through “cognitive reserve,” a sort of stockpile of brain strength, says Jennifer Manly at Columbia University in New York.

Dementia devastates the lives of everyone it touches, but our analysis
shows that women are bearing a disproportionate weight of the impact.

Our analysis shows that dementia became the leading cause of death for UK women
more than a decade ago, in 2011. Shockingly, it’s remained at this position ever since,
even at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Two in three people with dementia (65%) are women, and longer life expectancy alone does not explain this disparity. Women are also more likely to care for a loved one with dementia – making up around two thirds of unpaid carers.

The Impact of Dementia on Women infographic

Yet across medical research, data from women is too often missing. And in the lab:
female dementia researchers are less likely to move into senior roles than men.

We’re calling for action to tackle dementia’s disproportionate impact on women.
And we must ensure women can make a full contribution to research, both as
participants and as researchers.

The government must deliver on its Dementia Moonshot promise to double research funding. And we’re urging them to convene a Dementia Medicines Taskforce to speed
up progress in finding new treatments for this devastating condition.

Alzheimer’s impact on women
By Staff Reports -May 5, 2023

To the Editor:

On May 14, millions of Americans will honor their mothers, grandmothers,
and great-grandmothers for their contributions to families and society.

Unfortunately, thousands in Ohio have already lost a mother or grandmother
to Alzheimer’s or are currently caring for someone living with the disease.

The hard truth is that Alzheimer’s disproportionately impacts women.
Two-thirds of all Alzheimer’s cases are in women, and an overwhelming
majority don’t know they are at an increased risk for the disease.

There is some good news regarding the inequality of Alzheimer’s occurrence in women. Scientists have identified a gene that appears to increase the risk of Alzheimer’s in women, providing a potential new clue as to why more women than men are diagnosed with the disease. Also, a new study shows that women can reduce their increased risk. Personalized lifestyle interventions — such as diet, exercise, stress reduction and sleep hygiene — were found to reduce Alzheimer’s risk factors in both sexes, but they worked even better in women.

In addition to learning more about why the genetics of being a woman increases the risk
of cognitive impairment, women can join clinical trials investigating the issues of women and Alzheimer’s risk. Women interested in finding out more about clinical trials can go
to alz.org/Trial Match a free matching tool for research studies and treatment trials for Alzheimer’s and other dementia. Anyone can participate. There are trials for those with and without the disease.

While lifestyles are proving to help reduce risks, not everything that makes up a woman’s lifestyle is by choice. Historically, women have fulfilled the role of caregiver for the family, and more than 60 percent of all caregivers are female.
They are our mothers, wives, aunts, sisters, and daughters. When caregiving is provided
to a loved one with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, the toll on the caregiver can be high.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association 2023.

Facts and Figures:

• More than 60 percent of Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers are women,
and over one-third of them are daughters.

• The overwhelming majority of dementia caregivers who indicate a need for
individual counseling (85 percent) and respite care (84 percent) are women.

• Two and a half times as many women as men reported living with a person with dementia full time. Of those providing care to someone with dementia for more than
five years, 63 percent were women.

• Nearly 19% of female Alzheimer’s caregivers had to quit working either to become
full-time caregivers or because their caregiving duties became too burdensome.

There are 493,000 family and friends who provide unpaid care for loved ones living
with Alzheimer’s. These challenging and stressful caregiving responsibilities often fall
on female shoulders. Talk to your female relatives about women and Alzheimer’s risks
and learn the 10 warning signs.

According to the History Channel, more phone calls are made on Mother’s Day than on any other day of the year. These holiday chats with Mom — often cause phone traffic to spike by as much as 37 percent. Ignore the increased phone traffic and call your mother this Mother’s Day – or any day for that matter.

Vindicating Trump’s immigration policy.
As Democrats were falling over themselves calling Donald Trump an idiot after his

Number of Migrant Crossings Drops After Lifting of Title 42.
(Probably Passing them through at 3AM―when Democrats do their best work.)
On May 14, the Biden administration said that migrant crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border have fallen since Title 42 expired. The numbers we have experienced in the past two days are markedly down over what they were prior to the end of Title 42, Alejandro Mayorkas, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary, via Reuters.

According to U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, border patrol
agents have reported a 50% drop in crossings since May 11. Mayorkas said that criminal penalties for migrants entering the country illegally accounted for the decrease in illegal border crossings. There is a lawful, safe and orderly way to arrive in the United States.
That is through the pathways that President Biden has expanded in an unprecedented way, and then there’s a consequence if one does not use those lawful pathways,
Alejandro Mayorkas, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary, via Reuters.

Reuters reports that officials in communities near the border say that the expected
surge of migrants many fears will strain border facilities and towns is still on the way.
The number of migrants we were expecting initially – the big flow – is not here yet,
Victor Trevino, Mayor of Laredo, Texas, via Reuters.
Others pointed out that while the surge experienced at the border has yet to reach
the magnitude of what was expected, numbers still remain historically high.
