Avril Lavigne Describes Nightmare Experience with Lyme Disease
— — Singer Avril Lavigne said she’s seeing progress in her treatment
for Lyme disease, which struck her last year while she was on tour.
Her treatment regimen has included multiple antibiotics and ample rest.
Lavigne, 30, said trying to get a diagnosis was the worst time of her life.

Avril Lavigne and Lyme Disease: Your Questions Answered
“I literally became bedridden last October,” the “Complicated” singer said, adding that she saw multiple specialists who failed to get to the root of the problem. “They would pull up their computer and be like, ‘chronic fatigue syndrome.’ Or ‘Why don’t you try to get out of bed, Avril, and just go play
the piano?’ It’s like, ‘Are you depressed?’”
Lavigne said she would wake up with night sweats and felt as though she had the flu. “This went on and off for a month,” she said. “And I saw my doctor right away, got blood tests, got swabbed, and they didn’t really know what was wrong with me.” It wasn’t until two months into the symptoms that she said she suspected Lyme disease.  “I started going to other doctors and specifically asking, them, ‘I have Lyme disease. I know I do. Can you check me?’”

“And the thing is, when you’re a specialist, you also really know the disease inside and out and you can diagnose their symptoms,” Lavigne said. After getting the diagnosis of Lyme disease, which Lavigne believes she got from a tick bite last spring, the singer was bedridden for five months in her Ontario home. Lavigne, who is married to Nickelback front man Chad Kroeger, said her family and fans have helped her through her ordeal. Many fans, she said, made videos and sent her letters and posters and other items to show their support.
“I sat there in my bed, and I watched the videos and, like, did exactly what I’m doing now. I cried through the whole thing,” she said, laughing.
“Honestly, I felt very, very loved. And it sounds silly saying it, but I really truly did feel my fans through the process.” She took the opportunity to share encouragement to others with Lyme disease. “There is hope. Lyme disease does exist. And you can get better,” she said. She called this period her “second shot at life,” adding: “I really just want to go out there and truly do what I love.

So I’m so excited for life after this.”

When singer Avril Lavigne went missing from the music scene, there was tons of speculation. Was she pregnant? In rehab? Going through a split from her husband.
Focus on the mystery intensified in December after a fan Twitter account posted a direct message from Lavigne when she solicited prayers, saying she was “having some health issues.”
Now the Canadian singer has revealed to People magazine that she was bedridden for five months after contracting Lyme disease.
“I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk, and I couldn’t move,”
she told the magazine.
“I thought I was dying.”

Lyme disease: What you should know
Lavigne believes that she was bitten by a tick last spring. What followed was months of lightheadedness and lethargy that doctors were initially unable to diagnose.
The 30-year-old performer said she recuperated in her Ontario home, where her husband would use tour breaks to care for her and her mother moved in to assist.
“There were definitely times I couldn’t shower for a full week because I could barely stand,” she told People. “It felt like having all your life sucked out of you.”
Opinion: Why you should be afraid of Lyme disease
After her direct message about her health went viral, Lavigne was inundated with concern from fans. “The get-well messages and videos they sent touched me so deeply,” she said.
Avril Lavigne never thought she’d be on Christian radio. But the former pop-punk princess found herself there last October, when her uplifting anthem “Head Above Water” became an unexpected crossover hit on Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs chart, peaking at No. 2.
“I loved that,” Lavigne says, laughing. “But I’m not surprised because that’s where I got my start and how it all began. I grew up in a small town (in Ontario, Canada) singing in church, so it made me very happy. And needless to say, it made my parents very happy, too.” Although her strict Catholic upbringing eventually soured her on attending church (“They were really long services, and I was always so hungry,” she jokes), Lavigne says she still has her “own personal relationship with God, where I’m not a crazy Bible-thumper, but I do have faith.”

Avril Lavigne, 34, releases her sixth studio album "Head Above Water" on Friday.
Her spirituality has only deepened in the past few years.

Following a life-threatening battle with Lyme disease. The illness, which she contracted from a tick, causes extreme fatigue and joint pain and left the singer bedridden for months. She recalls one particular night during that time – lying in bed with her mom, feeling weak and convinced she was dying – that she was inspired to write “Head Above Water,” which is also the title of her new album, out Friday (her first since 2013).
“Music has been more healing than ever for me,” Lavigne says. “I was at a point where I wasn’t sure whether I’d be working or even doing music again, and then I started writing songs from my bedroom. ‘Head Above Water’ and ‘Warrior’ were the first two songs that I wrote, and then they just kept coming. It was cool for me to see because it showed me that music is such a big part of who I am without even thinking about it or trying to make a record.”

The album’s 12 songs are a marked departure from the snarling hits that defined Lavigne’s early career, when she embodied teenage angst on top-10 singles “Sk8er Boi,” “Complicated” and “Girlfriend.” “Tell Me It’s Over,” for instance, is a soulful doo-wop ballad about a fizzled romance, while “Crush” is a swoony, strings-laden confessional about being wary of new love. Lavigne, 34, looked to jazz and Motown legends including Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Diana Ross as she wrote. She hoped to showcase more of her voice, which was surprisingly strong after months of not using it as she recovered from Lyme. (“I was definitely concerned and thought I’d have to do a lot of warm-ups, but when I went into the studio, it was fine,” she recalls.)

It’s ‘scary’ making comeback
Nearly five years after her 2014 diagnosis, Lavigne says her disease is now under control. She spends much of her downtime painting and cooking at home in Los Angeles and hopes to go back on tour at some point, though she’s not quite there yet physically. “It’s a little scary,” Lavigne admits. As she begins to promote the album, “I’m like, ‘I just want to step into this, pace myself and enjoy every moment.’ Making that record was a big milestone for me and something I’m really proud of, and now I’m (starting to) get back up on stage. So I have my family with me and a good group of people around me that are helping me get through this.”

Avril Lavigne Opens Up About Her Health Crisis: ‘I Was Bedridden for 5 Months’ .
By Gillian Telling Updated April 01, 2015, 08:00 AM

The singer opens up about how a crippling case of Lyme disease has kept her out of the spotlight for nearly half a year. Singer Avril Lavigne opens up about the devastating disease that kept her bedridden for months – and how she’s fighting to recover. It wasn’t exactly the way she imagined spending her 30th birthday. When Avril Lavigne went to Las Vegas with a couple girlfriends last October to celebrate the milestone, she felt like doing anything but partying – in fact, she’d been feeling terrible for several months, but the doctors she’d seen couldn’t pinpoint exactly what was wrong with her.

“I could barely eat, and when we went to the pool, I had to leave and go lie in bed,” she tells PEOPLE in this week’s exclusive cover story. “My friends asked, ‘What’s wrong?’ I didn’t know.” Shortly after, following months of feeling lethargic and lightheaded, the normally energetic singer got her diagnosis: she had a severe case of Lyme disease. “I had no idea a bug bite could do this,” says Lavigne, who believes she was bit by a tick sometime last spring.

“I was bedridden for five months.”
The Canadian singer has been recuperating at her home in Ontario, where she spends time with family, watches movies and keeps up with fans through social media. “I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk, and I couldn’t move,” she says. “I thought I was dying.” Her mom moved in to help take care of her, while her husband Chad Kroeger, 40, stepped in when he could during breaks in his tour with Nickelback.
“There were definitely times I couldn’t shower for a full week because I could barely stand,” she says. “It felt like having all your life sucked out of you.” And while she had her share of dark moments, one thing that helped her get through the long days was knowing her fans were out there, waiting for her to get better. “They were asking about me since I was MIA, so I mentioned to one fan directly that I wasn’t feeling good,” Lavigne says, referencing a private Twitter message in December that went viral. “The get-well messages and videos they sent touched me so deeply.”
Now that she’s feeling more like herself the singer is ready to move forward, and that includes releasing new music. Her new Bite me Avril me what she may have went through “This was a wake-up call,” adds Lavigne. “I really just want to enjoy life from here on out.”
