[Chicago, IL]—Cancer survivor, Dena Mendes vividly remembers when she was first diagnosed. “At first, I was afraid I was going to die. In fact, the fears was so paralyzing …. that I was ready to do whatever the doctors told me I needed to do to survive, no questions asked.” Ten years later, she wishes she had the perspective of someone who had been in the trenches. “After my first few diagnoses, it got to the point where I would laugh and say, ‘Don’t worry, there are no problems—there are only solutions.’ The doctors used to look at me like I was crazy. After working with me for a while, they realized that I’m simply empowered.”
