The SUPER AGERs Study

When you look and  feel good on the outside you usually look and  feel good on the inside.  Therefore, the very elderly that have sharp minds and are still very active,  while making others wonder what is their secret to a wonderful life. What aren’t they telling others…. as evidence points to the attributes  of  eating a plant based diet  with a high in omega 3 to omega 6 ratio. While staying healthy with social interaction with others their own age by maintaining a good outlook on life as being vitally important.

Emily  Rogalski  Ph.D.a neuroscientist  at  Northwestern  University Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer’s Disease Center at Feinberg School of Medicine, in Chicago.  Whom  is researching the very elderly whom is  free     of  cognitive decline,  while having memories as sharp  as those  half  their age. Including a 96 year old retired neuroscientist and  a  81 – year – old – pack – day- smoker who drinks a nightly martini would a test.

For years,  researchers have been  fascinated by the segment of seniors   who  display  low  amounts  of  age — related  plaque.  Specifically,  MRI’s have shown:  the  anterior cingulate — or  the  small area  inside  the brain that’s important for thinking skills — is larger in the super agers than is in 50-  and  60- year old brains.  Also  they  are  amazed  with  the  size  of  the groups  cortex — or  the  outer  layer  of  the  brain  that’s  key  for memory, attention and other cognitive abilities.

When “the Super Agers”  are than compared to one another they tend to  have greater energy levels, positive outlooks on life, while generally being fun to be around as they make do  for themselves,  eat right,  get the proper exercise and mingle in social inter – action better than others whom aren’t  as – well – off  and in good health.  These are remarkable  findings given the   fact that grey matter or brain cell loss is a common part of  normal aging.

However,  in  the  Super Agers  with  laser sharp memories,  the  results show they have  fewer  fiber  like tangles than the brains of  those who had  aged normally. These tangles consist of  “tau protein”  that accumulate in brain cells  and is thought to eventually kill the cells. Tangles  are  found in  moderate numbers  in  the brains of  the elderly and dramatically increase in the brains of  Alzheimer’s diseased patients.
