‘Almost losing your life should be anyone’s wake – up call’…Deanna says, “I spiraled out of control on so many aspects of my life.” A lot of drugs, and alcohol, personal life in chaos. So many mistakes! Jail time, probation as I finally landed myself in prison.
Although prison is where I made the decision to change everything, and not for one specific reason, but for all. While in prison, I found out that I had contracted Hepatitis C. I didn’t know what to ask or even understand the details the Dr. tried to explain to me.
All I really remember is she basically said, ‘it’s common in prisons and mine wasn’t as bad as alot of others and people have been cured completely.’ She also said, “that since I wouldn’t be imprisoned long enough to receive full treatment for the Hep C.”
They would not start my treatment for it while I was there. Treatment came after my release from prison, as I was referred to Dr. Ravi Kamepalli, a specialist in Lima, Ohio. He began a six month treatment of medicine that included Pegintron 150 mcg, self injected once a week and Ribavirin 600mg. twice daily.
Within the first six weeks, my blood work was no longer showing any Hepatitis C. These medications were slowly taking care of the Hep C, but the treatment was also wreaking havoc on me mentally, as ~ well ~ as physically. I ate practically nothing because…. I just was not hungry, so I lost 50 pounds.
I don’t remember much during that time. I slept almost constantly. I could hardly function to form a sentence, much less hold a conversation with anyone. I also had some back issues, and the treatment increased the back pain. So I found myself seeking pain meds from Drs. only to have those interfere even more.
Thankfully, I had my support system and those people helped me keep going. If I had tough days, they were always there. I’m also thankful my treatment came after I was released from prison because of the harshness of the medication used and the side effects.
After years of pushing my limits to the max and putting my life in jeopardy. I am finally what I consider myself to be on the ‘right track.’ and “I’m in remission.” All blood work still shows no signs of Hep C in my system.
I’m still taking one day at a time, but I’m healthier and stronger than I have been in years. I’m eating healthier, exercising and losing a little weight here and there, but using my head to do so. I lost all my hair while in treatment, but it’s grown back in and looks great.
I’m starting to feel like the Ole’ Deanna. I’m receiving so much support and encouragement from so many directions. All of that is making me be and do things I’ve never thought would be possible. I am thankful for the second chance I was given, And I’m looking forward to a long healthy happy life!!! Thanks…. Deanna!
