Three quarters of U.S. Teens and adults are deficient in vitamin D, it’s been told…. 20 minutes in the sun each day is all one needs. To keep your daily value at proper limits, however, it’s only when the sunlight is above your head at a 45 degree angle (10 am to 2 pm) you gain that proper amount. With also according to findings…. published by the Archives of Internal Medicine.
Between 1988 and 1994, with the 45% of the 18,883 people tested having 30 ng/mL or more of vitamin D, and a decade later just 23 % of 13,369 people tested having that amount. There was anticipation that there would be some decline in overall vitamin D levels, however, the magnitude of decline in a relatively short period of time was surprising.
Adit Ginde, an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine says, “a lack of vitamin D is linked to rickets (soft weak bones in children; thinning bones in the elderly, and plays a role in heart disease, diabetes and cancer.” Also Ginde who has linked vitamin D deficiency to catching more colds, also blames sun screen following skin cancer prevention campaigns for the change.
Using sunscreen with as little as a 15 – factor protection cuts the skins vitamin D production by 99 percent, the study notes, as there are few sources of the vitamin in our diets. Exciting new research conducted at Creighton University School of Medicine in Nebraska, has revealed supplementing vitamin D and calcium can reduce your risk of cancer by an astonishing 77 percent.
This research provides strong evidence that vitamin D is the single most effective supplement against cancer. This study involved 1,179 healthy women from rural Nebraska. One group of women was given calcium (around 1500 mg daily) and vitamin D (1100 iu daily.) while another group was given a placebo. Over the four years, the group receiving calcium and vitamin D supplements showed a 60 percent decrease in cancer.
Note that…. these astonishing effects were achieved on what many nutritionist consider to be a low dose of vitamin D and the calcium supplement was probably calcium carbonate and not the high grade calcium malate, aspartate or similar forms. So what It all means? It means “if ” you take high quality calcium supplements or premium fish oil…. you might be able to achieve larger percentage reduction.
The best conclusion: is to have your blood tested for vitamin D deficiency. If it has been determined that are levels are below 70ng/mL. You might want to consider building levels up by taking 10,ooo iu’s for a short term, and then taking between 2,000 to 5,000 iu’s depending on the nature of your job (being inside or outside work.)
