Thyroid Cancer: a thyroid neoplasm that is malignant which can be treated with radioactive iodine or surgical resection of the thyroid gland. Most often the first symptom of thyroid cancer is a nodule in the thyroid region of the neck. However, many adults have small nodules in their thyroids, typically under 50% of these nodules are found to be malignant.
Thyroid nodules are of particular concern when they are found in those under the age of 20 years old. The prevention of benign nodules at this age is less likely, and therefore, the potential for malignancy is far greater. Germ cell tumors, are more likely to be found in the first two decades of life. Malignant germ cell tumors include dysgerminomas, endodermal, sinus tumors, embryonal carcinomas, non gestational choriocarcinomas.
Teratomas, which can contain tissues from all three germ cell layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, and neuroderm are the most common germcile tumors). Benign mature teratomas contain mature elements, whereas, malignant teratomas contain immature elements and are graded out accordingly to the amount of immature neural tissue. Also when it comes to getting thyroid and breast cancer make sure of your iodine levels.
